The wine is Honoro Vera, their Organic Monastrell 2020. Owned and made by Bodegas Juan Gill in Jumilla. Monastrell is also known as the more famous French name of Mourvèdre. Often used in Chateauneuf-du-Papes and southern France blends, or popular Australian GMS blends, and usually found in Californian blends. Honoro Vera is a label owned by Grupo Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares to produce fantastic Spanish wines at unbelievable prices. This one is sourced from their winery in Jumilla, an area best known for Monastrell.
The Gil family from Jumilla has around 800 hectares of vineyards in the appellation, a figure that is constantly growing. A large part of their vineyards is already certified organic, and the rest are in conversion, with the expectation that 100% of them will be certified for the 2022 harvest. They are also involved in a number of projects related to the sustainability of their business: reducing their carbon footprint, producing their own compost, and a new vinification facility powered by solar energy and with zero-waste. The winery possesses 300 acres of vineyards that grow in sandy, stony, and limestone soils with deficient levels of organic matter at an altitude over 3,000 feet above sea level. The Monastrell grape is sourced from this bleak area, derived exclusively from organically farmed vineyards planted on limestone soils with a low yield. Despite its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, they have a continental climate with Mediterranean influences. This translates into an arid climate with very little rainfall. Winters are cold, reaching temperatures below freezing, contrasting the hot summers with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. The reduced yield and harsh growing conditions give the grapes a fantastic, intense character. Much like us New Englanders.
These harsh growing conditions, less than 12 inches of rain a year, no irrigation, high altitude, and huge temperature swings, in some ways, make it easier to be organic. It is effortless to control bugs and mold where it is such a struggle just for the vines to survive.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks for 15 days at a temperature of 77ΒΊF. Then Honoro Vega Organic 2020 was kept refrigerated until its bottling. This is a young, vibrant, and, most important, unoaked organic red wine that will make your socks roll up and down that can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years.
Monastrell from organic vineyards. This wine was produced under organic regulations established in the European Union as well as in the U.S. NOP certification. The vines are planted on chalky soils without irrigation and very low yields, with an annual rainfall below 12 inches. There is no room for chemical products or synthetic pesticides in our daily work. Honoro Vera exhibits great aromatic complexity, richness, and length, over-delivering in a big way. Drink over the next 4 years.

This organic red wine by Juan Gil carries some vibrant flavors of raspberries and strawberries and some earthy hints. Smooth texture and nice acidity. Long finish with some mineral remembrances. Guia Penin (Spain's leading wine publication) 90 pts
The certified-organic 2020 Honoro Vera Organic was produced with Monastrell that fermented in open-top stainless steel vats with selected indigenous yeasts and was bottled unoaked. It has notes of ripe black fruit and aromatic herbs, juicy, hedonistic, and tasty, and it's a very good value and apt for the table. Balanced and harmonious, perhaps a little more concentrated than the regular Honoro Vera Monastrell. A bargain. Robert Parker Wine Advocate 90 pts
