It's Fall Y'all! Exciting things are happening...

The team at Community Lodgings is ramping up for a busy Fall season with tours of our program and housing and events to raise awareness about the organization's mission and impact.

On Wednesday, September 18, Community Lodgings had the distinct pleasure of welcoming the Citi Foundation team and nearly 20 people representing grantee organizations from across the US to Arlandria-Chirilagua/Alexandria, VA for a customized tour of our Transitional Housing, Affordable Housing, and Youth Education Programs. During their visit, we also focused on how the organization addresses food insecurity for families in the community.

Community Lodgings along with several tour attendees are grantees of Citi Foundation's Community Progress Makers Cohort #4, which is made up of 50 nationally recognized, visionary organizations connecting low-income communities with economic opportunity and receiving $1M in unrestricted, trust-based funding over the next three years.

We still need your help to continue lifting families from instability to independence. The need is greater than we can all imagine.

The recent Hunger Report released by Capital Area Food Bank - one of our alliance partners - shows that 37% of households experienced food insecurity between May 2023 and May 2024.

Here are two ways to support and give back to the community while helping students succeed and working families thrive.

  • Volunteer: Share an hour or two once a week and become a tutor, mentor, or chaperone students on field trips. You may also share a specialized skill with us. Let's chat!
  • Donate: Help us serve students enrolled in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and their hardworking parents and guardians through our Transitional Housing and Affordable Housing Programs. Now is the time! Our Summer Appeal ends September 30!

Youth Education Program Impact

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

We asked our Youth Education Program students how has the experience in the program impacted their lives over the years as many have participated more than 5 years, and our students shared a lot!

From our staff, volunteers, alliance partners, and community of contributors, we are making a positive impact on each of these students' futures.

Our program staff collaborate with ACPS Teachers, reinforce lessons taught in school to include reading, math, and science, increase students' cognitive abilities in reading, math, and science, work with the social and emotional health of each student, introduce students to new concepts, and enrich their educational experience.

It takes a strong commitment and entire community to lift economically marginalized families.

Joshua's Success Stories

At Community Lodgings, we are always inspired by the resilience and adaptability of our students as they navigate important transitions in their academic journeys.

Recently, we spoke with Joshua, who shared his candid thoughts on moving into middle school and the challenges and surprises he has encountered along the way.

"Middle school is not boring. You have to transition fast and you get to see your friends for a bit," Joshua explained. "The classes are fast, and you feel like the end of the day comes quickly. I like AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) because it helps me get prepared for the other grades. I kind of like mathematics. The teacher says funny things and he is nice. I didn’t expect to have to change so fast in P.E. I didn’t expect my classes to get harder."

Joshua’s reflections remind us that middle school is not just a new academic challenge, but a period of personal growth and transition. We are incredibly proud of Joshua, as well as his positive attitude and eagerness to learn.

Our resilient and tenacious students inspire us daily with their fortitude in challenging situations.

Keep up the great work, Joshua! You are doing well.
