SEC and CFTC Unveil Unified Vision for Crypto Regulation (SEC.gov)

In a joint statement issued on September 5, 2025, SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins and CFTC Acting Chairman Caroline D. Pham announced a groundbreaking collaboration to harmonize regulatory frameworks for digital assets, marking a new chapter in U.S. financial oversight. The statement highlights a coordinated push to streamline data standards, expand trading hours, clarify rules around event and perpetual contracts, and create innovation exemptions for DeFi protocols. Notably, the agencies proposed developing a framework for portfolio margining to reduce capital inefficiencies, signaling an effort to modernize cross-agency compliance and improve liquidity access. This enhanced cooperation aims to eliminate regulatory gray areas that have hindered innovation, and will culminate in a joint SEC-CFTC roundtable on September 29 focused on building a pro-innovation, pro-investor regulatory environment to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in crypto and blockchain technology.
