Did you Know?

Authenticity is not about trying to fit a specific mold of a leader; it's about being true to yourself while also demonstrating empathy, integrity, and a commitment to your team's success. By leading authentically, you can create a positive and impactful leadership style that inspires and motivates others.

Dear Molly,

How do you integrate leadership principles into your authentic, personal style?

Leadership looks as different as the number of leaders you know. Your leadership style is most authentic when you do it your way.

I love the human approach to leadership profiled in the show "Ted Lasso." What can we learn from it?

Molly

Authenticity

Here in Annapolis, our new local professional soccer team broke the National Regular Season NPSL Attendance Record and won the Mid-Atlantic Regular Season. This weekend, the Annapolis Blues FC won the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship in their inaugural season. Many are calling this the “Lasso effect,” so it seemed a good time to catch up and finish watching “Ted Lasso.”

My husband and I binge-watched season 3 this weekend during our summer rainstorms. It is a rare show that can evoke tears and laughter during each episode! There are so many amazing leadership lessons from this show that we can explore (without spoiling it for anyone who hasn’t watched yet!).

Transformational Leadership: Ted Lasso embodies many characteristics of a transformational leader. This leadership theory emphasizes the leader's ability to inspire and motivate their followers to achieve higher levels of performance. Transformational leaders often exhibit empathy, optimism, and a positive attitude, which aligns with the lessons of leading with empathy, a positive attitude, and resilience. Ted stepping up and fumbling through a connection with Colin Hughes is a shining example of his empathy.

Servant Leadership: This theory suggests that leaders should prioritize the needs of their team members above their own. By listening to their team, empowering them, and fostering a positive team culture, leaders can exemplify the principles of servant leadership, as demonstrated by Ted Lasso. One of Ted’s last comments to the writer Trent Crimm embodies this.

Authentic Leadership: Authentic leaders are genuine, transparent, and true to themselves, which builds trust and credibility with their team. Ted Lasso's honesty, humility, and ability to acknowledge mistakes align with the principles of authentic leadership. Ted never hides how much he struggles and in Season 3 openly asks his peers if he is “a mess.” The term “progmess” is used, and it’s a rich word we should all add to our vocabulary.

Situational Leadership: Ted Lasso's adaptability and willingness to adjust his leadership style to the situation at hand reflect the ideas behind situational leadership. This theory suggests that effective leaders should be able to modify their approach based on the specific needs and capabilities of their team members. It takes both humility and confidence to pull this off.

Emotional Intelligence: Ted Lasso's ability to connect with people on an emotional level and understand their feelings demonstrates emotional intelligence. This concept highlights the importance of self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in effective leadership. When Ted talks compassionately to Beard about the importance of forgiveness, we learn a lot about both Beard and Ted.

Positive Psychology: The show's emphasis on maintaining a positive attitude and focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses aligns with the principles of positive psychology. Leaders who adopt a positive and optimistic mindset can have a significant impact on the overall morale and productivity of their teams. Ted’s “Believe” sign features prominently in Season 3.

Team Building and Group Dynamics: The lessons about building a strong team culture, fostering collaboration, and empowering team members are supported by various theories related to team building and group dynamics. Creating a cohesive and supportive team environment can lead to higher performance and job satisfaction. You have to watch yourself to see how well this does or doesn’t work for AFC Richmond.
