City Manager’s Message

As Whittier’s new City Manager, I’m honored to serve a community known for its history, civic pride, and commitment to working together. With many years in local government, I understand how important it is for residents to feel connected to their city and to have access to services and programs that improve daily life.

Summer in Whittier offers many ways to stay active and engaged. In July, residents can take part in our summer concert series on Mondays and Thursdays, enjoy family movie night in the park on July 19, or visit the Whittier Public Library for programs like the Summer Reading Club, Zine Fest, and Level Up Lounge.

For those planning to attend Independence Day activities, the annual fireworks show will be held at York Field on July 4. Details are available below.

I also invite you to explore the new Whittier Cruiser, our free all-electric shuttle serving Uptown and nearby destinations. The Cruiser is an easy way to shop, dine, and get around while reducing traffic and opening up parking.

City staff remain dedicated to providing programs, services, and improvements that support our community’s well-being. I look forward to meeting more of you this summer and working together to keep Whittier the great city that it is!

Conal McNamara, City Manager

Whittier Cancels 4th of July Freedom Walk Event

The City of Whittier has announced the cancellation of this year’s 4th of July Freedom Walk, originally scheduled for the morning of Friday, July 4, 2025, at Palm Park.

“While celebrating our nation’s founding is very important to me and to Whittier residents, my colleagues and I also want to be sensitive to the recent feedback we’ve received from some community members asking that we pause this year’s Freedom Walk event,” said Mayor Joe Vinatieri.

The evening 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at York Field will continue as scheduled. The City remains committed to providing opportunities for families and neighbors to come together to celebrate Independence Day.

The Whittier Cruiser is Here:

Hop In and Ride for Free!

Big news, Whittier! Our city’s new all-electric shuttle service has officially hit the streets, and residents are already loving it. The Whittier Cruiser is designed to make getting around some of our busiest destinations easier, greener, and (best of all) it's completely free!

During its first week, the Cruiser gave more than 700 rides to local favorites like Uptown, The Groves, and Rodeo 72. Social media has been buzzing with excitement, with thousands of likes, comments, and shares from neighbors eager to try it out.

Here’s how it works: just download the Ride Circuit app on your phone, select “Whittier,” and request a ride between any two points within the service area. No fixed routes. No fares. Just an on-demand, electric lift to wherever you’re headed.

The Cruiser operates Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 AM to 10 PM, making it perfect for lunch trips, shopping runs, or an evening out.

A few things to know:

  • Riders need to be 18 or older to book a ride, but kids are welcome to come along with an adult.
  • Pets can ride too if the driver gives the okay—just keep them on your lap or the floor.
  • If you’re traveling with little ones, be sure to bring your own car seat or booster as required by California law.

Even better, this is just the beginning. The Cruiser fleet is set to grow in the coming weeks, with more vehicles joining the service this summer and a wheelchair-accessible Cruiser arriving in late July so everyone can ride comfortably.

Ready to give it a spin? Download the app, hop aboard, and see why everyone’s talking about the Whittier Cruiser.
