Top Federal Workers’ Union Breaks With Democrats on Shutdown

On Monday, the largest federal workers’ union called for Congress to immediately pass a spending bill to end the government shutdown. This announcement was a pivot for the union, the American Federation of Government Employees, which had previously supported Democrat’s attempts to gain concessions on healthcare subsidies through budget negotiations during the shutdown. This comes after both parties failed to pass resolutions to pay some federal workers while thousands of unionized and non-unionized government employees go without pay for a third week.
