Three unions unite in massive LAUSD strike threat: What’s at stake for workers, families

A massive strike looms in Los Angeles, as more than three unions representing nearly 85% of LAUSD’s 83,300 workers have formed an unprecedented alliance. UTLA, SEIU Local 99 and Associated Administrators of Los Angeles all threaten to strike on Tuesday, April 14 if the school district fails to meet their demands for a fair contract. This type of alliance, including all types of staff from bus drivers, cafeteria workers, teachers and principals, is an impressive demonstration of worker power and solidarity. If the strike takes effect, the more than 70,000 striking workers would bring the second largest school district in the country to a standstill.

Today, we celebrate Dolores Huerta’s 96th birthday. Huerta is a distinguished labor activist who has dedicated her life to achieving social change and fighting for worker justice. Huerta is pictured here speaking at the UCLA Labor Center’s "Fighting For Social Justice: A Teach-in on the New Labor Movement" conference in 1997. Other speakers included John Sweeney, Richard Trumka, Linda Chavez-Thompson and Kent Wong.
