SoFi Stadium workers threaten to strike if ICE isn’t banned from World Cup games

The FIFA World Cup is kicking off in Los Angeles next month, but concerns over the presence of federal immigration enforcement at the stadiums is casting a pall over the highly-anticipated tournament. Alarm was raised in Los Angeles and around the world after an ICE official said the agency would play a “key part” in venue security. Hospitality workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 11 have led the charge demanding that the tournament and stadium leadership restrict the presence of ICE at venues, both for the safety of workers and attendees. Concern for international travelers prompted the human rights group Amnesty International to issue a travel advisory for visitors attending the tournament. More than 100 human rights groups and UNITE HERE Local 11 are urging FIFA to request a moratorium on ICE raids during the World Cup. Stadium workers remain fearful that they will be targeted by immigration enforcement at work, regardless of their immigration status, and are prepared to strike to get their demands met.

Supporting workers at the New Otani, 1997

This week’s labor history memory shows workers, community members and labor leaders marching in Downtown Los Angeles in support of workers at the New Otani hotel in 1997. The campaign against the hotel and its owners, the Kajima Corporation, was kicked off by HERE Local 11 after management fired three workers and refused to recognize the union. John Sweeney, the President of AFL-CIO came to Los Angeles to join the demonstration, pledging at the rally after the march to travel to Japan to negotiate directly with Kajima Corp.
