September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

A library card hits all the right notes! 🎵

No matter what your tastes are, your library card connects you to something you’ll love - from books and audiobooks to movies, music, programs, digital resources and more.

This September, celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month by visiting any Carlsbad City Library location. Sign up for a library card or show your existing library card and receive a commemorative bookmark or pencil, while supplies last.

And while you’re out exploring, stop by the Sculpture Garden at 2955 Elmwood St., across from the Georgina Cole Library, to make some music of your own. The interactive percussion instruments invite visitors to tap, chime and drum their way through an outdoor musical experience.

Come find your next favorite thing and let your library card hit all the right notes.

Teen Insights

Teens in grades 7 to 12 can earn service hours by writing book reviews. Teens can email their reviews to libraryteens@carlsbadca.gov. Visit the Teen Insights webpage for more details.

Read the following Teen Insights Review about the young adult fantasy novel, "Immortal Consequences" by I.V. Marie:

"This dark fantasy novel is about a group of deceased teenagers at Blackwood Academy, a mysterious school in the afterlife. To escape purgatory, the six top students are chosen to compete in the Decennial, which is a deadly competition featuring four dangerous magical trials where only one victor can win freedom. The competitive students navigate intense rivalries, romance and deadly secrets, leading them to quickly realize that losing the game carries a fate far worse than death.

I would highly recommend "Immortal Consequences" to others. The book follows many different perspectives of the six contestants. Each view of the new distinct personalities and hardships of Wren, August, Masika, Irene, Olivier and Emilio make the book a quite enjoyable read. It is specifically written for young adults who love dark fantasy, magical survival games, slight romance and high-stakes drama with plenty of teenage angst."

Homework assistance for students K-12 is available on a first-come, first-served basis when the Carlsbad Unified School District is in session.

Each student is guaranteed up to 30 minutes of tutoring. No sign-ups are required. Please note that this is a volunteer-based program and may be canceled depending on volunteer availability.

Hispanic Heritage Festival

Join us for this inclusive experience of live performances and cultural crafts that honor Hispanic culture. Enjoy baile folklórico as well as art-making booths like Ojo de Dios, flag ornaments and lotería.

Master Composter Bonnie Metzger will discuss ways in which you can minimize your carbon footprint and create natural nutrient-rich soil amendments with your food and yard waste.

Visuals and examples will show the different types of bins, what finished compost and vermicast should look like, and how to use worm castings and compost tea safely and effectively.

Reading challenges for middle and high school students

Calling all readers in grades six through twelve. Carlsbad City Library has two exciting reading challenges to keep you reading all year long:

50 Books Before Middle School Promotion for grades six through eight

100 Books Before High School Graduation for grades nine through twelve

Sign up in Beanstack, then visit any Carlsbad City Library location to claim your registration reward—a free book and a pin board to help you start your reading journey! For every 10 books you read, you’ll earn a book-themed pin of your choice. Complete the challenge and celebrate with a special graduation lei to showcase your achievement and your pins.

Join us for an afternoon of creativity and fun! Tweens will get the opportunity to make DIY crafts and connect with new friends. Each week will feature a new craft project or activity. All materials will be provided.

Carlsbad’s Public Safety Open House is Saturday, Oct. 3

Join us at the City of Carlsbad’s Public Safety Open House on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carlsbad Safety Training Center, 5750 Orion Street. All ages can explore the public safety training center, watch firefighters in action, see a K-9 officer demonstration, tour public works vehicles and learn essential safety skills including using a fire extinguisher and performing CPR. The event coincides with Fire Prevention Week and National Crime Prevention Month, making it a great opportunity to learn important safety tips.

All Carlsbad City Library locations will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
