Hima Bindu (standing to the right of Jacqueline Carnevali), is a former student, college graduate, and now part of our administrative team. She oversees the Adult Literacy programs at Shiva Nagar and
MA Nagar, works closely with the language teachers, and supervises the sewing initiatives.

Adult Students Work Together

Our adult students are increasingly satisfied with the reading, writing and math skills they are learning. In each of our schools they have become a collaborative group of friends and help each other in and outside of class. Yes, there is a lot of drill but there is also the enjoyment of reading simple stories for the first time! Attendees held a celebration at the end of the term.
Possibilities for the Future

We are developing the idea of assisting participants to start a sewing business as a possibility for the future. This would entail using writing and math skills to take orders, calculate payments and to earn money for family needs. “Exams” are given so that participants can evaluate their progress and teachers can modify lessons to adapt instruction to skill levels.
Wash Grant Funding

Sewing machines were funded by our Rotary WASH Grant. By joining academic literacy with sewing lessons we were able to attract mothers and grandmothers for their first school experience. 
Amazing Sewing

Above and below are photos to show the variety of clothing they have learned to sew. Initially lessons focused on hand stitching and cutting patterns. Now all are learning to use sewing machines.
