Louis Jadot

Beaujolais Villages, 2022

Beaujolais is synonymous with Turkey Day. Produced entirely from Gamay, the wine's high acid, low tannins, and juicy mouthfeel make it one of the best bottles to pair with turkey. Food & Wine

Four out of five wine geeks agree that the wine most common to suggest with the traditional Turkey feast is Beaujolais Villages. Of course, you have some that recommend Dry Riesling, Pinot Noirs, or Old Bordeaux. Then there are those vying for influencer status that proclaims the virtues of Viognier, Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, White Rioja, and other wines, sometimes not from this earth. If you are looking for a wine that will be enjoyed by the connoisseur and novice alike while indulging in one of America's most popular eating holidays, then Beaujolais Villages checks off all the right boxes. The most popular Beaujolais Villages, according to Wine-Searcher, is Louis Jadot, and for good reason.

Beaujolais is the wine-growing area south of Macon and north of the Rhone Valley. The Beaujolais Villages are 38 villages (15,000 acres) in north Beaujolais, considered the better, high-quality growing area than the rest of Beaujolais (55,000 acres) with bright sunshine and dry, warming winds help the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Found here are the granite and schist soils of the Massif Central mountain range. These coarse, sandy soils are considered superior to the more clay-dominated soils of southern Beaujolais. There are even better regions in the Northern Beaujolais Villages region, of which there are 10 Cru Beaujolais.

Louis Jadot was established in Beaune by founder Louis-Henry Jadot in 1859. They have carefully striven to establish and maintain the quality of their wines for 160 years through the steady acquisition of the best vineyards in Burgundy. The Beaujolais regional cuvée has been a very important wine for Louis Jadot for a long time. They have established themselves as one of the most important producers in the region after producing consistent Beaujolais-Villages wines year after year. Their connection in the area consists of 600 acres of contracted vines, representing 60% of the total volume of this cuvée and a winery dedicated to vinification of that volume. In 1998, Louis Jadot opened their new Combe aux Jacques Winery near the village of Brouilly.

Jadot Beaujolais Villages stands head and shoulders above other Beaujolais producers. Unlike most negociants who buy crushed grapes from the growers, Jadot buys whole-bunch gapes and crushes them at their winery. The fruit for their Beaujolais-Villages AOC comes from two main sources: local growers with whom they have long-time contracts, from the sites in Lantigné, with blue soils, Lancié, with pink granitic soils, and from Cru Régnié. Jadot is one of the few Beaujolais producers that use the winemaking process of replis, in which wines of a higher appellation (Régnié) are blended with wines from the appellation below them (Beaujolais Villages). The resulting wine is a fuller, more complex version of the wine not normally found in this level of wine.

The Gamay grapes used for Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages average 25 years old and are grown on granite and sandy subsoils that contain a high percentage of manganese, which produces an intense and rich expression of Gamay. Grapes are handpicked in whole bunches. At the winery, the grapes were crushed and go through a 12-day fermentation period in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with periodic pump over during maceration. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks until release, ready to drink.

From the Winery

This crisp, fruit-forward, juicy wine has expressive aromas and flavors of ripe red berries, with nice weight in the mouth.

Critical Acclaim

The 2022 Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages is fresh, bright, and pleasingly fruity. This wine shows aromas and flavors of red and black fruits. Enjoy it with rabbit rillettes and mild cheeses. Wine.com 90 pts

This is a good, hearty and muscular Beaujolais that would pair with grilled vegetables and meats. This wine has a nose of black plum, rose hip, strawberry and blossom. On the palate the wine is firm with red and black fruit predominating. Wine Enthusiast 90 pts

Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages, 2022

I feel that this wine has always been an integral part of my life. My first job in a restaurant, washing dishes and soon becoming a waiter, I was introduced to Jadot Beaujolais Village as the leading seller on our wine list. Any restaurant I cooked at, bartended, or managed, there was Louis Jadot Beaujolais Village as part of my existence. When I got hired by a national distributor, it was with Kobrand, their importer into the U.S., and later as a local distributor and store manager; Jadot always seemed to be part of my portfolio. What I have been most impressed by is how consistently good this wine is, and tasting with the staff, I was pleased for them to see how great this wine is. It pours with a semi-opaque ruby color—aromas of grandma's rhubarb pie and cranberry sauce. On the palate, we found boysenberry jam, raspberry, Ocean Spray Cranberry juice, cherry pie, light tannins with a long pomegranate, and English Breakfast Tea finish. The acids keep the fruit alive on the palate and make you want more stuffing. Although turkey is a relatively neutral protein, it is all the extra fix-ins that need to stand up to wine. Gamay grape wines, especially Jadot Beaujolais Village, are the kind of wine you would be proud to serve throughout the holidays.
