Happening at BLCI
Congratulations Tomasa!
Earlier this month, several BLCI staff members had the unique opportunity to travel to Kona, Hawaii to participate in the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) Regional Conference.

BLCI’s Barrio Logan Director, Tomasa Mauricio, was surprised when it was announced that she was selected as the recipient of The Steve Holeman Award. The award, named for the former Upward Bound Director at Occidental College, recognizes the incredible work done by directors of educational equity programs.

Tomasa has been serving the students of BLCI for approximately a year and a half and appreciates the opportunity to work with a broad range of students and parents. She also noted the importance of providing support to students as well as their families, and believes that BLCI has a model that benefits the entire family.

She shared that she was “a bit surprised and truly humbled” upon receiving the award, as well as a bit emotional. We are proud to have such a passionate and hardworking leader on the BLCI team!
San Diego Loyal Cleat Drive
In February, we shared the news that San Diego Loyal staff had organized a cleat drive benefitting our El Cajon Soccer Program. On March 10th, students excitedly received the cleats and had a chance to break them in with San Diego Loyal staff. With help from SD Loyal Staff, community members and a generous donation from futbl.org, students will be well-equipped for future practices and games.

BLCI’s soccer program is unique to BLCI’s El Cajon site and provides an additional program focused on keeping students on track to become the first college graduate in their family. BLCI’s soccer program has GPA requirements to keep students focused on academics, community service events to keep students involved and important educational aspects such as good decision making. The slogan of the program is “Soccer is the Hook – College is the Goal” and is a great way to keep students focused on their overall goals.
