Dear Molly,
Do you ever have trouble sleeping because you are so excited? I was literally so excited about writing this newsletter that I couldn’t sleep. As a woman, it is hard to ignore women’s history month. And when I think about the women’s history that resonates with me right now, it’s the women in sailing who have created the path for me and the rest of us lucky enough to be on the water. Here’s a tribute, a love letter, to them, and the women they have inspired. Hope you enjoy it!

By almost all metrics (like income, leadership, and ownership), women still do not have equal footing in our global society. Despite giving birth to 100% of our population, women are still working hard to have an equal say and make an equal amount. For this reason, when I think of women’s history, it isn’t that far back. Women have made strides in my own lifetime.
| The group of women leaders that inspire me most, across the board, are those I have met through sailing. Just thinking of all the names of these women who not only sail beautifully, but also have taken leadership positions in sailing, brings a smile to my face. | |

Enigmatic Women
What is so enigmatic about these women that thinking of them brings me amazing joy?

- Despite excelling in what is predominantly a man’s world, they have stayed in touch with supporting other women.
- They are excellent leaders, who embody the best of contemporary leadership principles and could give workshops on communication, empathy, strategy, decision-making, growth (both personal and organizational), finance, networking, politics, marketing and advertising, technology, and sales.
- They are tenacious and have found a way to follow their passion. Some have pursued a niche to give them unique expertise that gets them invited offshore and on big boats. Others have been multifaceted and excelled in many roles.
- They create a balance between coed and women’s sailing. Women’s only events create opportunities for women to take on roles that are predominantly occupied by men, and also give women the opportunity to learn from and support each other. Coed events give us the opportunity to compete against anyone we want to, professional or amateur, depending upon the event and the class.
- In addition to having jobs and personal lives, they are pursuing a very competitive passion that takes time, intelligence, and skill to master (and kicking some butt while they are at it)!
- They are empowered and empowering, they are positive and optimistic, and they are living life on their terms.
- They have run races and chaired regattas. They are teachers and mentors. They own businesses, they are mothers and wives and they have run national and international organizations. They are Olympians and Rolex-wearing champions, and they have literally raced around the world.

Thank You
To each of you, thank you for the inspiration to do it all, better. Thank you for the hardships you have endured as the first: the first class of women at the Naval Academy, the first all-women’s boat in the Whitbread, the first female commodore, the first female RC officer, the first female skipper, the only woman on the boat, the chair of the first all-women J/105 regatta, the first female officer of your class, the first female head instructor, the female first protest officer and more. Thank you for the grace you have done it with. Thank you for your perseverance. Thank you for the generosity of your smile and your encouragement. Thank you for not leaving us behind and bringing us with you.
And here’s to all the young women coming behind, who are coming on with speed! Let’s go!
