We get to choose how to be while doing anything.
Being in a complete state of gratitude as I’m writing this to you all. It’s my choice. Being in a state of unconditional love as I work through my day at the studio. It’s my choice. Being in a state of vast charity while driving my car to and from anywhere. It’s my choice. Being in a state of ease and full support while listening to a friend talk as she is crying because she just lost her husband. It’s my choice.
So much has happened over the last month that has reminded me often to take a pause and set my intention and energetic state of being before doing. The fabulous article that I am so grateful for from The Blade, the wonderful event at The Toledo Zoo, and receiving the news of the nominations through the City Paper…all of them bringing a state of joy and gratitude. The pause to remember the hard work, sacrifices and support by so many and to allow the joy to penetrate every cell of my being: Then, waking up in the middle of the night hearing my son’s very shook voice right after he was in a car accident. The pause to take a long smooth breath and to stay with my exhales as I ask him questions and give him clarity as to what to do and allow grace and gratitude to flood me for hearing his voice, knowing he’s ok.
We get to choose how to be. We don’t get to choose all that unfolds or the doings, but the state of being is where our power sits and what our being decides how to function from. It takes practice to hear a loved one’s shaking voice, sense the fear and tension start to build in the body, then to instantly take a pause to choose how to be via the breath and relaxation response. This is living yoga…not just practicing on our mats or in a meditation practice. This is the exact essence of true peace. When there’s no noise or trouble, it’s our practicing ground. It’s where we can explore all the sensations safely by knowing we are in a safe place and time. Then, we begin to add the practices to daily occurrences.
This is the essence of yoga. It is not a faith-based system… it is a repertoire of practices that bring us well-being and ease as we live and do. It teaches and allows us to use our free will to choose and sustain our state of being and to live all the unfoldings in a way that preserves our health and well-being versus breaking it down. No wonder it has been practiced for thousands of years and continues today. Those that have embarked on this self-study and self-care practice have witnessed such powerful awakenings within themselves…sometimes so powerful there are no words.
We’d love to have you join us at the studio for classes, privates, or the yoga teacher training program (most take this program for themselves and their own journey with no expectation to teach).
Choose how you’d like to be now. Carry it with you through the day no matter what comes. Stay with the breath and keep it long and smooth…it will guide you well.
Namaste 🙏🏻
