$5-a-Bag Book Sale


The Friends of the Waterloo Public Library $5-a-Bag Book Sale brings you the best deal in town. If you love books, this sale is for you! We supply the bags; you fill them up!

Public Sale

March 1 | 9 am - 2 pm | Library Basement

Please note, the basement will be closed the Monday following this sale, so Friends have the opportunity to tidy up.


All proceeds benefit special events and programming at the library.

Together We Read

March 3 & March 10 | 5:30 pm - 7 pm | Meeting Room AB


We want to inspire engagement, creativity, and academic success through a love of reading! Join us for this free, four-part family series, where each child will receive a free book after every session, and dinner will be provided. To register, please call the Youth Department at 319-287-3976.

Knights of the Square Table: Teen Chess Club

Join Teen Librarian Dusty and other chess enthusiasts for our new chess club— the Knights of the Square Table! Compete against fellow players, challenge your friends, and experience the thrill of timed matches. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned player, all skill levels are welcome to participate. All players will have the opportunity to win cool prizes and earn titles like "Knight of the Month"! Snacks are provided.

Community Craft Corner

Join us for a drop-in crafting session in the Hive! Bring along any current craft projects you’re working on—any and all portable crafts using library-safe materials are welcome. Don’t have a project or supplies? No problem! We’ll provide a variety of materials for you to use. Come enjoy a relaxed, supportive environment where you can work on your crafts with no pressure and no critique.

Board Game Night

In collaboration with Friendly Meeple, the WPL is hosting Board Game Night! We'll be playing games from Friendly Meeple's personal library of 400+ board games, as well as the games in our collection available for checkout. This event is free and open to anyone wanting to get their game on!

MakeFest!

Calling all creative kids! Swing by the library this spring break for some hands-on art fun. We’ll provide all the materials you need and set up several stations featuring watercolors, chalk pastels, ink pens, cardboard, paper, and more. Create your own masterpieces inspired by prompts or team up with other library kiddos on collaborative projects. Let’s get creative together!

Tween Lego League

Join us for an epic day of Lego building for tweens! We will have multiple sets for participants to build that will be displayed in the library for everyone to admire. We will also be creating unique artwork using Prixel stencils! Registration is required and limited to 30 participants so please do so here.

FAFSA Family Night!

Are you or a Family Member interested in attending college in the upcoming year? Join us for Family FAFSA Night, hosted by the Waterloo Public Library in partnership with Black Hawk County Local College Access Network! Completing the FAFSA unlocks opportunities for grants, scholarships, work-study, loans, and more. Representatives from Hawkeye Community College and Wartburg College will be on hand to guide you through the process and answer your questions.

ISU Gardening Series

The Master Gardeners from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are back for a five-part gardening series to share this year's hottest gardening tips, tricks, and trends!


March 31- I Beg your Pardon, I Never Promised You a Rain Garden: Iowa DNR Watershed and Source Water Coordinator Josh Balk will show you how to incorporate beautiful and environmentally friendly rain gardens into your home landscape!

Are you an aspiring novelist, poet, or someone who loves writing short stories? Join us for our Teen Writer's Workshop! We'll work with different writing prompts and brainstorm ideas for our writing. Those comfortable sharing their work with others are encouraged to do so! Whether you're looking for a quiet place to write or an animated group of voracious readers to get ideas from, all are welcome!

Teen Manga Club

We're hosting a Manga club for teens! We'll talk about our favorite series, favorite characters, and enjoy some fun treats, including snacks from a monthly Snack Box subscription. Don't see a series in our collection that you think we should have? We'll also talk about making suggestions for what the library should order so others can check them out and enjoy! Whether you're a seasoned reader or new to Manga, we've saved a spot for you!

The Well Read Club

If you're looking to broaden your reading horizons, have we got the book club for you! The Well Read Club meets virtually from 6pm-7pm every month to discuss a selected fiction or nonfiction title. We'll read anything and everything!

Battle of the Books Book Club

Get ready for Battle of the Books! Join us on the third Tuesday of each month to hang out and chat about selected titles from the 2024-2025 Battle of the Books list. Each session will feature themed art projects, fun activities, and snacks. Even if you're not competing at your school, we’d LOVE to have you join us to talk about some fantastic books!
