The Thrifty Irishman rises again
|
|
“From the time I got my initial loan until my building burned down and then again until I re-opened, Frank Sullivan and Hyperion Bank took care of me,” says Robert McCormac of the Thrifty Irishman, which, pre-fire, was the biggest thrift shop in Philly. It opened originally in 2012 and is open again at 2226 East Butler St. (across from Walmart and next to Lidl) with 4 employees.
Robert – who owns the business with his wife Victoria – shares his story: “On April 7, 2020, four months after closing on the purchase of our building, it burned to the ground. On April 8 we met Frank at the Bank; he tells us not to worry, that the bank has our back. And I knew in the heart that was true.”
Indeed, Hyperion’s Frank Sullivan worked with the McCormac’s to get a construction loan to rebuild the part of the Thrifty Irishman building that was repairable. “Three years later – April 7, 2022 – we have reopened. There is still work to be done, but we are open for business!”
This style of “relationship banking” suits the McCormac’s well, as Robert notes, ‘I do all my business by shaking hands and winning my customer over with fair price and a positive attitude.”
Maybe he learned that from Dick Segal, a “salvage impresario” who ran a thrift store called Jo-Mar – also in the Kensington neighborhood, where McCormac grew up – and who McCormac credits with teaching him about the business from the time he was 14 years old. “He was an absolutely incredible retailer; he’d say anybody could tell the good stuff – that was easy. But he could take things that were used and make people want them again, and that’s what I love about my business.”
Circling back to the bank, McCormac adds, “I just wanna’ touch on the guys that I see every day (at the bank): Lee (Green), Adam (Millman) and Cameron (Chislom) are always kind to me, whether it’s transferring funds on the telephone or helping my son make a deposit when I send him to the bank. They even helped me track down a PS5 (Sony PlayStation 5) for my son – on their own time!”
McCormac considers himself lucky, and why not? He was born on St. Patrick’s Day and his initial loan for the Thrifty Irishman was approved on, you guessed it, St. Pat’s Day.
Visit his thrift shop, where he says he sells a lot for a little, ranging from clothing (designer labels & men’s and women’s and kid’s), housewares, furniture and occasionally even architectural salvage items. Check out the website for 7-day-a-week hours, but the phone number is easy to remember: 215-March17 (215-627-2417).

Special event
Hyperion hosts author-judge + PHL attorneys
|
|
The evening of May 5 Hyperion hosted a VIP reception and book event at the Union League of Philadelphia with Special Guest Judge William S. Duffey, Jr, author of The Significant Lawyer: The Pursuit of Purpose and Professionalism, which addresses “what it takes to restore our calling to serve others in need of counsel.”
Attorneys and a few other guests heard Judge Duffey speak, enjoyed a brief Q&A session and had an opportunity to have their book signed. (All royalties from the book go to fund a scholarship for a minority student who has been accepted to law school.)
Judge Duffey was a United States District Judge in Atlanta before he retired in 2018. He continues to work as a lawyer in specialized engagements, having recently represented the United States at a conference hosted by Pope Francis at the Vatican, and now adds published author to his list of accomplishments.

Hyperion Bank has been great for us. Amy and Joel go far beyond answering any questions we have; they proactively reach out to us about potential issues which helps prevent problems from happening at all. The online portal allows us to run the office virtually, but the personal service is what makes them great.
