Share Your Feedback: Fire Hazard Severity Zones

🔥 New fire hazard maps are out. What do they mean for Whittier?

The State of California has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps, and Whittier is included. These maps show how likely wildfires are to occur in different areas over time based on natural conditions like vegetation, slope, and weather.

➡️ Areas are classified as Moderate, High, or Very High fire hazard

➡️ This is about long-term hazard, not current fire risk or home safety

➡️ Red on the map doesn’t mean you’re in danger now. It reflects how wildfire could behave over the next 30 to 50 years

📣 Why does this matter?

The City of Whittier is required by state law to adopt the updated fire hazard map for our area. However, the City does have some discretion:

• It may choose to expand the designated zones to include additional areas, based on local conditions and fire protection needs

• It cannot lower the severity level of any area shown on the map

• Once adopted, the local map is final and cannot be challenged by the State

Adopting the map means:

• Certain properties may become subject to new state building code requirements

• Defensible space rules may apply to more homes

• It may affect insurance availability or cost, especially in Very High zones

🗣️ We’re currently in the public comment period of map adoption. This is your opportunity to review the map, learn more, and share your feedback before adoption is finalized.
