This week’s Vitals: 1,260 / 5 min read

Today’s Vitals is a 5-minute read. If you only have 1 minute, here are the highlights:

  • The measles situation here in Manitoba is changing very quickly, including over 20 cases and multiple exposure sites including schools and health centres.
  • Be sure to share your views on a CPSM consultation about two important topics - reducing barriers to licensure for U.S. and internationally trained physicians and the use of the title “doctor” by some clinical assistants.
  • The new Canada Disability Benefit opens next week, increasing the number of applications for the Disability Tax Credit… and physicians’ administrative burden.
  • Another mail strike is possible as early as later this month. We’re monitoring closely.
  • CancerCare is looking for feedback about prevention and screening services.
  • Events: If you started practice in Manitoba in the last five years, we have an event to meet others early in their career too. We also have a unique narrative-based medicine workshop coming up!

TOP STORIES

01

Measles Updates

Since our update last week, Manitoba Public Health has provided multiple updates, describing the situation as “changing very quickly.” More than 20 cases have been identified so far this year, primarily in the Southern Health region. There are multiple exposure sites including schools, school buses and health facilities.

Read our full coverage, including the latest advice for physicians, advice for suspect cases and how Manitobans can review their immunization status.

02

CPSM Consultation Reminder

A reminder that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) has a consultation underway right now that focuses on two areas: reducing barriers to licensure for U.S. and internationally-trained physicians, and considering extending the title of “Doctor” to Clinical Assistants (CAs). You can see our recent summary of the changes here, with links to the CPSM consultation document.

So far, we have received largely supportive feedback from members about the licensure changes, and some thoughtful concerns about the extension of the use of the title “Dr.” to CAs.

HAVE YOUR SAY: If you would like us to consider your perspective in our submission to CPSM, please let us know at practiceadvice@doctorsmanitoba.ca by May 16. You can also send your feedback directly to CPSM by May 25, and we invite you to copy us on your submission to them.

03

Canada Disability Benefit

The new Canada Disability Benefit, which provides financial support to low- and modest-income working-age (18-64) individuals with disabilities, is set to open for applications next week, on May 15, 2025. Payments are expected to begin in July 2025. The new Benefit will increase the number of applications for the Disability Tax Credit, adding to administrative burden for physicians. We’re watching this closely, and working with the CMA and the CRA to find ways to reduce this burden.

See our story from a few weeks ago with an explainer about the Disability Benefit v.s. the Tax Credit and what the expected impact on physicians.

09

New Pope and Health Care

Just today, we learned the Catholic Church selected a new Pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has just become the first American pontiff in history and will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

Faith leaders, including the Pope, set a tone that can impact health care decisions, including everything from reproductive care to vaccine hesitancy. During the pandemic, for example, Pope Francis suggested vaccinations are a “moral obligation.” This is something we will be monitoring closely, and welcome your feedback as well.

DRMB IN THE NEWS

We’re in the news ensuring physicians’ perspectives are part of the story. See the latest:

  • Manitoba regulator proposes fast-track for U.S. physicians: In a story about CPSM consultations on recognizing U.S. licenses, which followed our advocacy for such a change, our CEO Theresa Oswald noted that Doctors Manitoba applauds the College’s decision to put the changes forward for review. The physician shortage is still the top concern among Manitoba physicians, so we will continue to advocate for changes to improve recruitment and retention. Get the full story here.
  • Canada Aims to Lure US Doctors North Amid Trump Turmoil: We took our message on U.S. recruitment to American media last week too, with the help of Iowa transplant and Winnipegosis champion Dr. Alison Carleton! Check out the full story here.
  • Celebrating diversity in the medical field on National Physicians Day: We celebrated National Physicians’ Day by recognizing the incredible personal and professional diversity you all bring to this great province. Theresa spoke live on CBC Manitoba Radio last week about why diversity in medicine matters, echoing and amplifying our messaging from HeartBeat that doctors in this province are diverse in their expertise, and united in their care. HEALTH SYSTEM UPDATES

Service Disruptions

Obstetrical and surgical services at Bethesda Regional Health Centre will be on diversion until May 9, 2025. During this time, the hospital will be unable to offer surgical or labour and delivery care at this location.

We are monitoring service disruptions in rural communities closely and invite you to alert us to them. Please report by emailing our Practice, Advice and Compensation team at PAC@doctorsmantioba.ca.
