Beyond Bodywork Therapies

Massage is powerful, but it’s only one piece of the healing puzzle. For me, every session is designed not just to release tension or soothe pain, but to inspire a more conscious connection to your own well-being.

True healing happens when we begin to listen to our bodies between the appointments - when we stretch for five mindful minutes, choose the long walk instead of the fast scroll, or pause to breathe before we react.

Today, I'd love to invite you on an adventure as we explore the many joyful ways healing can take shape. From sports to gardening, movement to stillness, let's rediscover how connection to nature, to others and to ourselves - can be the most powerful cure of all.

Saturday, August 9th from 9AM - Noon

This July, Island City Massage is honored to partner with the Hare Bandits, a non-competitive running club that fosters a safe space for the LGBTQ community to explore injury-free fitness. Their event, Stride for Pride 5K & Relay, is a perfect way to challenge your physical abilities while making friends and enjoying a beautiful morning at the park.

Whether you're in it to compete or just want to soak up the vibe, this is more than a race — it’s a gathering of uplifting energy. Time in nature, laughter between strangers, and shared movement all have proven healing effects. Think of it as a little bit of forest bathing, a little bit of fitness, and a whole lot of heart. I will be running as part of the Island City Team! You won't want to miss that.

Sciatic Nerve Pain & Runners: What You Need to Know

As a massage therapist, one of the most common complaints I hear from runners - especially those increasing mileage or training on uneven terrain - is tightness or discomfort radiating through the low back, glutes, or down the leg. More often than not, the culprit is related to the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It travels from the lower spine through the glutes and down the back of each leg. When it becomes irritated or compressed, either at the spine or by surrounding soft tissue, it can cause a variety of symptoms including:

  • Sharp pain or shooting pain
  • Numbness or tingling down the leg
  • A dull ache in the glute or hamstring
  • Tightness that worsen after long runs or prolonged sitting

If you’re feeling that familiar tightness or leg tingling after a run, try incorporating gentle figure-four stretches, foam rolling the glutes, or walking breaks into your routine. Always consider booking a massage to reset your muscle tension before it builds up. Your body is powerful but it also deserves care, rest, and recovery.

🌟 More than a Game: The Healing Power of Connection

When we talk about living a healthy life, we often focus on physical habits like stretching, eating well, or staying active. And while those things matter, so do the people we surround ourselves with.

Being part of my dodgeball team isn’t just about breaking a sweat (though trust me, we do!). It’s about showing up - for myself, for my teammates, and for the joy that comes from shared movement and laughter. Physically, it keeps me active and agile. Mentally, it gives me a space to disconnect from stress and reconnect with a sense of playfulness. But beyond the court, the league as a whole has been a lifeline - a source of community, camaraderie, and emotional resilience.

In a world that can often feel isolating, finding a group that sees you, values you, and celebrates your wins (big or small) can be a form of healing all its own. Strong friendships. Shared goals. Safe spaces to be exactly who you are. These are the real ingredients for wellness and I’m so grateful to find them in our local league.
