Murphy Goode Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Since its inception in 1985, Murphy Good Winery has been built on words to live by; “don’t take life too seriously.” The winery was conceived from a long-standing weekly get-together at their favorite cafe over glasses of wine where three long-time friends played a strategy game called Liars Dice. This poker-like game involves dice and the ability to determine if a friend is bluffing by calling him a liar. On a particularly lively night, the trio decided to make their love for wine official. They pooled their collective talents and established Murphy-Goode, a winery built around a common concept: don’t take life so seriously. What was serious was the amount of wine talent these three men brought to the table. Tim Murphy and Dale Goode were two of the most important and cutting-edge growers in the Alexander Valley. They brought wire trellising, broad-scale drip irrigation, leaf pulling, and other modern viticultural techniques to this bucolic AVA. The third founding member, Dave Ready, was the marketing expert of the group. He was the man behind the winery’s quirky personality and playful communications. This was the beginning of Murpy-Goode wines, embraced by serious and casual wine drinkers as much for their unpretentious attitude as for their exceptional wines.

In 1985, the Murphy Goode estate launched the brand with two wines: estate grown Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. Fume Blanc was coined by Iconic USA winemaker Robert Mondavi in 1968 as a nod to the fame of the mineral-rich wines made from Sauvignon Blanc in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé in the Loire Valley of France. Over the years, the varietal name Fume Blanc led to confusion and is better known today by its noble varietal name, Sauvignon Blanc. In the beginning, the Murphy-Goode Vineyard provided the grapes. Over the years, Murphy-Goode Winery steadily increased production, expanding the winery capacity and augmenting the harvest with fruit from the winery’s “grower partners,” local farmers, and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision.

Initially, the partners custom-crushed their grapes at a neighboring winery, where consultant Merry Edwards guided the winemaking. After constructing a modest production facility on Tim Murphy’s Alexander Valley ranch in 1987, they hired Winemaker Christina Benz. Chris made fifteen vintages of Murphy-Goode wine before turning the winemaking over to David Ready Jr. in 2001. Dave’s road to winemaking was a little more circuitous. (There I go, using those big words again.)

Growing up in Minneapolis, David Ready Jr. aspired to be not just a musician but a rock star. Fronting his band, Mango Jam, on vocals, Ready found success recording and touring with an Allman Brothers-influenced sound. Also, a 'Dead Head', Ready followed the Grateful Dead on tour for 179 shows. He moved to California to continue his musical pursuits. While in California, Ready found a new passion when his father, Dave Ready Sr., the founding partner in Murphy Goode Winery, invited him up to Healdsburg to work crush at Murphy-Goode Winery, which paid $7 an hour. It was a chance for Dave to stay in California and to be able to see more concerts and be close to Jerry, and then he got even more involved in wine. Ready moved to Australia to continue his newfound winemaking passion before returning to California in the late 90s to become an Assistant Winemaker at Murphy Goode and eventually Winemaker in 2001. He has been Murphy Goode’s head winemaker for the last 23 vintages. Dave still plays drums and gets out to his share of concerts when he’s not busy in the vineyards. Fun fact: In an interview, I was listening to, David’s favorite wine to bring to a musical event is Murphy Goode Sauvignon Blanc because of its versatility.

This Week's Wine Insider Offer

Murphy Goode Sauvignon Blanc 2022

This was a fun wine to taste. Murphy Goode has a great portfolio of wine, with Sauvignon Blanc being their first love. This wine did not disappoint. It pours a pale straw-white color. Aromas of nectarine, lime rind, white plum, and tangelo. Flavors continued on the palate with ripe honeydew melon, lemon zest, and lemongrass. It has zippy acids and a fresh, clean, dry finish. A wine that is so good and refreshing you will definitely need to keep a second bottle chilled and ready to drink. This wine calls for sunglasses and a comfortable outdoor chair. At $9 a bottle, it is a steal. At $6 a bottle after the MIR coupon, it is a must-have. The only problem is the rebate is on six bottles, and they state you can’t double the offer per household. Maybe a better way of looking at it for a final cost of $36, you get 6 bottles for what you might typically spend on one bottle.
