Be Your Authentic Self

Why Your Introvert or Extrovert Tendencies

Should Dictate How You Market Your Business

Do you avoid marketing tasks because you just don't feel comfortable with them? The trick to making marketing work is to discover tactics that feel authentic to you! They need to fit not only your budget but also your personality.

Fill a room with 100 people and 70 will have big smiles on their faces. They love to be with other people and thrive in large social situations. The other 30 in the room will have small smiles on their faces and would really rather be at home by themselves or at a quiet cafe having an intimate one-on-one conversation. Why is that? It's all about our introvert or extrovert tendencies.

According to studies, about 70% of the population has extrovert personalities. The other 30% have introvert personalities! Being an introvert has nothing to do with being shy. On the contrary, many introverts love being with others and enjoy being social! Likewise, being an extrovert has nothing to do with being a loudmouthed party person. It's all about where you get your energy!

Introverts gain energy by being alone, while extroverts charge their batteries around other people. So, determine which marketing situations energize and inspire you, and take advantage of them. Likewise, scale back (or delegate) marketing tasks and activities that don't match your dominant style.

As you create your marketing plan (yep, it's something you need to do), find marketing methods that best fit your personality. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

If your energy comes from within you, you might especially enjoy:

  • sending direct mail, such as postcards
  • sending e-newsletters
  • adding a blog within your website
  • using social media: Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest
  • visiting and participating in online chats and groups
  • small group & one-on-one networking
  • using video
  • hosting teleclasses
  • speaking/workshop host to a small group

If your energy comes from the people around you, you might especially enjoy:

  • using social media to make personal connections who you can talk to in person
  • membership in multiple professional associations
  • partnering with complementary businesses
  • trade show or expo booth participation
  • appearing on television or radio
  • being interviewed by a reporter
  • hosting a launch party for a new product or service
  • wearing a name tag and/or company clothing in public
