Has social housing changed since Grenfell?

Journalist Pete Apps has been one of the most dedicated reporters on the scandal of the Grenfell fire which could have been prevented if authorities had just listened to tenants and residents.

On the 9th anniversary of the fire, Apps investigates whether there has been any fundamental change and comments that "Overall, it would be wrong to say that the Grenfell fire has had no impact on social housing ... But for too many of those at the sharp end of a system which still too frequently goes wrong, this change will be hard to see".

SHAC was invited to comment and highlighted the persistent power imbalance between landlords and tenants. Read here.

National Housing Union:

Taking the Blueprint to the Trade Unions

We are working hard to get the Blueprint for a National Housing Union for all tenants and residents ready to take to the TUC. It has expanded to more than 50 pages and is going through a final edit. We will share it publicly in the next week.

Separately, we will be at Stall 16 at Trades Union Congress in Brighton from the 13th-16th September. If you are there representing your union, or know people who are, please visit and encourage others to do so.

We should also get confirmation soon of our fringe meeting slot. Fran Heathcote, General Secretary of the public sector PCS union has agreed to speak at the launch, and Steve Wright of the FBU fire brigade union has also been invited. See more here.

PILC Heat Networks Legal Action

Our partners at the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) has launched a crowd-funder as part of a challenge against Lambeth Council over oppressive communal heating and hot water service charges. The unaffordable charges, which in one year increased by 350%, have led to eviction proceedings against tenants.

This is a very important test case and PILC is crowdfunding to support the tenants involved in the claim. To donate please visit the dedicated page here.
