The busy season is upon us - the transition from back-to-school to the holidays - and our primary focus these last three months of the year is your convenience.

There's a lot going on in the world of personal finance.

For retirees, there's...

🟣 Ensuring required minimum distributions are completed

🟣 Medicare open enrollment

🟣 Social Security's cost-of-living adjustment

🟣 Adjustments to Medicare costs heading into 2027

For those of us still working, there's...

πŸ”΅ Annual benefit enrollment

πŸ”΅ Reviewing workplace retirement contributions

πŸ”΅ HSA/FSA planning

πŸ”΅ FAFSA and planning for education costs

For all of us, there's...

🟠 Year-end tax planning

🟠 Charitable giving

🟠 Family gifting

🟠 Portfolio rebalancing, among many other topics.

That's on top of the other moving parts in our lives.

We are firm believers that some of the best financial planning happens when you don’t have to manage every detail yourself.

That's where The McNamara Investment Group steps in.

As we begin year-end tax planning, we will coordinate anticipated capital gains, investment income and other portfolio activity with tax preparers, so you don't have to be the middleman.

If you have recently changed your tax preparer, would like to confirm who we have on file for you or want us to begin coordinating this information on your behalf, please reach out to our team today so we can take one more thing off your plate.

Dan Discusses: Scaling Mount Crumpet

"And then! Oh, the noise! Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!

There's one thing I hate! All the NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!"

Really makes you wonder how The Grinch would handle the coming months prior to his redemptive story arc.

As we note below in The Rundown, volatility has ticked up a bit as we approach a historically uneasy period for the markets. Concerns over the Iran War, inflation and the Federal Reserve have re-ignited some of the uncertainty we witnessed earlier in the year.

And, there's a chance the lead up to the mid-term elections fans those flames.

It's time like these when we remind clients that any potential volatility isn't new and isn't permanent. As the noise starts to ramp up to a near-deafening level, we continue to preach the value of focusing on the long-term, especially considering that, historically, the markets have done well after mid-term elections are over and we have some clarity as to the path forward.

As always, don't hesitate to reach out to our team with any concerns you may have. Being a sounding board, especially during tough times, is the greatest service we provide.

Here's hoping you have a great holiday season!ο»Ώ

The Rundown - Market Recap

Here's a quick look back at the major headlines...

  • The major indexes gave back some of those gains by the end of the month, though, and, apart from the major tech names, struggled to find solid footing in September amid an resurgence of familiar concerns.

  • Bond yields jumped considerably in anticipation of and as a result of that move from the Fed. The 10-year Treasury yield was up over 5.2% as recently as Sept. 25, its highest level since mid-2007. Average rates on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage were up above 7.5% as of Sept. 29.

So, where does that leave us heading into Q4?

Well, historically the markets have seen rallies following the clarity derived from mid-term election results. As a CFRA commentary noted earlier this week:

"Since WWII, the fourth quarter (Q4) of midterm election years has typically seen the S&P 500 benefit from the lifting of election uncertainty. Indeed, the '500' posted its second-best performance in Q4 of the entire 16-quarter presidential cycle, rising an average of 6.4% in price and advancing 85% of the time. Better yet, Q1 of the third year recorded the best results, gaining 7.0% and rising 90% of the time, while Q2 of year three was the third best. However, not all Q4s saw black ink, as minor-to-major declines of 0.7%, 6.3%, and 14.0% were posted in 1994, 1978, and 2018, respectively, all of which occurred at the beginning of new rate-tightening cycles."

Eyes will be on the Fed and the potential for at least one more rate hike before year-end. Naturally, inflation reports and ongoing negotiations to end the Iran War will factor in as the bond market attempts to handicap the path forward.

Q3 earnings will be a major factor on the stock side of the equation, especially after the S&P 500 posted "extraordinary results" with a Q2 earnings growth of "an impressive 35%," per Janney's investment Strategy Group.
