Norton Privada 2016

A good place to seek out great value wines is in Argentina, especially in their red blends done in a Bordeaux style. And because the major costs are low in Argentina, labor, land, and water, the cost of wine is always a great bang for your buck relative to anywhere else. A great example is from the winemaker and pioneer Norton Winery with their Privada 2016.

Bodegas Norton has a long history of award-winning wine. Founded in 1895, they are the most awarded Argentine wine brand in the US. Decanter magazine included David Bonomi in its 2017 list of the Top 10 Best Winemakers in South America. Owned by the Langes–Swarovski family, they take special pride in their wine called Privada. The name “Privada" refers to the family's private reserve, originally enjoyed with only their closest friends. Its grapes come from their oldest vineyards, from 50 to 90 years old, located in Luján de Cuyo. An amazing blend of Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon at a price that should be three times as much compared to other wines.

Winemaker Notes

A rich chocolaty aroma leads to deeply spiced flavors of dark plum, kirsch, and mocha. Creamy mid-palate, with a finish that is filled with notes of cocoa powder and raspberry. Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Accolades

Grapes from 50- to 90-year-old vines yield this outstanding, elegant, yet lush blend of 40% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Merlot with big notes of leather, espresso, and black olive. Black cherry washes over black pepper on the finish. Anthony Dias Blue Tasting Pannel 93 pts

Concentrated dark fruit and chocolate mousse flavors are framed by firm tannins and acidity in this inky, muscular style. Sanguine notes fill the finish, complemented by plenty of dried beef and savory accents. Needs a good steak. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2023. Wine Spectator 91 pts
