Notes of Joy - Week of June 13
This Week's Gospel: Mark 4:26-34
The mustard seed becomes a great shrub that shelters the birds, recalling ancient images of the tree of life. We’d expect a cedar or a sequoia, but Jesus finds the power of God better imaged in a tiny, no-account seed. It’s not the way we expect divine activity to look. Yet the tree of life is here, in the cross around which we gather, the tree into which we are grafted through baptism, the true vine that nourishes us with its fruit in the cup we share. It may not appear all that impressive, but while nobody’s looking it grows with a power beyond our understanding.

FRIDAY, JUNE 11th at 5:30 pm AST

Our new pastor, Sean Avery, is being ordained this Friday June 11th at 5:30 AST at his home church, Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Bellingham, WA. Our Bishop Shelley Wickstrom will be officiating. The ceremony will be livestreamed on their Facebook page this Friday. If we can’t be there in person, we can still share this special day virtually.

Saturday’s electronic recycling event was a great success. Total Reclaim was pleased with the turnout and 3,182 lbs. of electronics/harmful products were recycled. Way to go Eagle River!

  • ASST E-WASTE - 665 lbs
  • LCDs - 902 lbs
  • CRTs - 738 lbs
  • CPUs - 732 lbs
  • BULBS - 50 lbs
  • BATTERIES - 95 lbs

The church also buzzed with folks completing tasks on our clean-up “to-do” list. Lawns cut, Fire Marshall violations corrected, windows washed, refrigerator defrosted, rooms dusted and organized and the list goes on! There are still items on the list so please sign up for a task to be done when it is most convenient for your schedule. Arrangements can be made for access to the building by calling the office. Our pride in our facility and community was definitely on display! A big thank you to everyone for your help.

Front Sidewalk Replacement
The LAST of our 2018 Earthquake repairs happened this week!

The damaged concrete sidewalk and ramped walkway was replaced. It looks wonderful and we are so grateful and excited to have it done!
Church Directories are Ready!
Thank you for getting your photos to us.  Please pick up a Church Directory at Church on Sundays or at the Church during Office Hours. One per household. Do not share the information with people outside of our fellowship or use for commercial purposes.
Please call any Church Council Member and they will reach a Pastor for you. Do not hesitate to call! We have three pastors willing to help us during this time before Pastor Sean arrives in case of a pastoral care concern.
Name Tags
There are new Name Tags to wear for Sunday morning. They are on the wall next to the water fountain. A big thank you to Corrine Finnie for working on this project. If your name is missing or spelled wrong, please let her know! The plan is that we start wearing them in June to be accustomed to the pattern. This will help our new Pastor get to know us when he arrives July 5th! And it is a help to all of us.
Chugiak Eagle River Food Pantry
Eris Soellers reports the Food Pantry is low on food at this time. You're welcome to bring your food donations to church on Sunday. The Soellers family faithfully leads this food ministry for Joy Lutheran.
Joy of Reading Book Club
Our Book Club meets the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30 PM.  We read a wide variety of books and have a wide variety of discussions!

We would love to have you join us if you can make it. There will not be a Book Club meeting in July, but we will resume in August.
