Check ‘washing’
Protect your funds, credit & identity

So-called “check washing” has been in the news again of late. Good Morning America recently aired a quick segment on it; you can see that here.
What is it? The short version: Legitimate checks are stolen and “cleaned” so they can be repurposed with a new recipient and new amount. The results can range from theft of just the funds from that one check to draining an account and even more open-ended identity theft. “We have not seen a lot of this within our customer base, thankfully, and prevention is the best method of keeping it that way,” says Hyperion Bank President Lou DeCesare.
In addition to safeguards noted in the video, Lou shares these tips:
- Consider using non-check payment forms.
- Mail checks from inside a U.S. Post Office; we know thieves have been “fishing” mail out of the blue USPS drop boxes.
- Do not mail outgoing mail from your home mailbox & consider installing a locking mailbox at home to protect incoming mail.
- Of course, if you are a victim of check washing, immediately notify your bank & consider “locking” your credit.
- Keep in mind that the check-washing crime may not end with one check; thus the importance of notifying your bank, notifying appropriate authorities and taking other steps to protect your credit and identity.

Nicole brings 25+ years’ experience to the role, noting, “remember when banking meant having someone that you had a relationship with face to face? That’s what I do! I build and expand relationships one client at a time.” Her favorite part of the job? Getting out and meeting bank customers wherever they are. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Rider University. Brian McNulty
Welcome new team member
Brian McNulty joins Hyperion Bank as a Credit Analyst. The Bucks County, PA native is a graduate of Millersville University with a Business Management degree. Prior to joining us he worked at Truist Bank as a Branch Team Leader and worked at PNC Bank as a Commercial Underwriter. Brian is a Volunteer Firefighter with the Newtown Fire Association. He loves watching and attending sporting events, playing the guitar, and traveling, especially with family, to Ocean City, NJ. Please help us welcome Brian!

Stephanie Berrocal
We are growing
Stephanie Berrocal is our new Staff Accountant at Hyperion Bank. She grew up in northeast Philadelphia, now residing in Bucks County. Prior to joining the bank, Stephanie worked in the casino industry for 12 years as a Casino Revenue Supervisor. She also runs her own small business making custom items, so, not surprisingly, one of her hobbies is crafting, along with “anything to stay active.” Stephanie and her husband of 9 years have 4 children. Our Third Quarter Report to Shareholders – which includes many of our team members, customers and business partners – Hyperion Bancshares, Inc., Hyperion Bank’s holding company, reported a 15% increase in our loan portfolio, as we have been able to deploy cash generated from deposit growth.
Hyperion also added new team members, who you will be meeting here in the newsletter, on our social media and, hopefully, when you visit our banking offices.
