November 2024 Angel of the Month | Victoria S.

Victoria Soto, stand up and take a bow. It is with resounding applause, appreciation, and thankfulness that we name you our Angel of the Month for November 2024! In just a little more than a year, your boundless energy and enthusiasm have warmed the hearts of 18 different clients. Perhaps itā€™s your smile, or perhaps itā€™s your ability to simply laugh a bit when things get tough. Whatever it is, we know our clients can always count on you to bring happiness and joy into their homes, long after the last of the colorful autumn leaves have fallen from the trees.

When asked what her magic trick is, Victoria couldnā€™t help but smile. ā€œIā€™m always just attentive and kind to my clients,ā€ she said. ā€œIā€™m never mad, and Iā€™m always in a good mood, no matter what. I always try to laugh, and they love that about me.ā€

Victoriaā€™s first memories taking care of a senior are from when she was just a little girl growing up in the Dominican Republic. Despite being so young, she remembers helping her grandmother with everything from cooking and cleaning to grocery shopping or going to the pharmacy. Things were very different than they are now, she explained. One thing that didnā€™t change, though, was Victoriaā€™s passion for taking care of seniors. Even after studying criminal justice in college and working as a paralegal in the Boston Immigration Office, she still found herself drawn to nursing.

Preparing Your Home for the Fall and Winter Seasons: Safety Tips for Seniors

As the colder months approach, it's important to ensure your home is safe and comfortable for the fall and winter seasons. The change in weather brings different challenges, particularly for seniors, who may be more vulnerable to colder temperatures and slippery surfaces. At Visiting Angels, we prioritize the safety and well-being of seniors, and we're here to help ensure that your home is ready for the upcoming seasons. Here are some practical tips to prepare your home and keep it safe during the colder months:

Improve Lighting for Safety

As daylight hours shorten, itā€™s important to have adequate lighting throughout the home, especially in areas like staircases, hallways, and entryways. Consider installing brighter bulbs or adding nightlights to make navigating the house easier and safer for seniors. Well-lit rooms reduce the risk of trips and falls, which are more common in darker spaces.

Check Heating Systems

Ensuring your heating system is functioning properly is essential for maintaining warmth and comfort. Before the cold sets in, have your furnace or heating system inspected and serviced to ensure itā€™s working efficiently. Space heaters can be a great supplement, but make sure they are placed on flat surfaces and kept away from flammable materials. Visiting Angels caregivers can help monitor home temperatures and assist with keeping the home warm and comfortable.

Reduce Fall Risks

Falls are a leading cause of injury for seniors, and wet or icy surfaces can make walking outside dangerous. Start by clearing walkways, driveways, and steps of any debris or leaves, and be sure to address potential icy spots once the temperatures drop. Indoors, remove clutter, secure loose rugs, and ensure that there are sturdy handrails on stairs. At Visiting Angels, we help reduce fall risks by assisting seniors with mobility and providing support around the home to ensure their safety.

Seal Drafts and Insulate Windows

Drafty windows and doors can make a home uncomfortably cold and increase heating costs. Seal any drafts around windows and doors with weather stripping or caulking, and consider adding heavy curtains to insulate windows. Keeping the home properly insulated helps maintain a comfortable temperature and prevents cold air from seeping in.

Test Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

With increased use of heating systems, itā€™s crucial to ensure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly. Check the batteries in these devices and test them regularly to ensure theyā€™re functioning. This is especially important when fireplaces, space heaters, or gas stoves are being used more frequently in the colder months.

Ensure Safe Outdoor Access

For seniors who still enjoy going outside for fresh air or a short walk, make sure that outdoor spaces are safe and accessible. Clear leaves from walkways and keep salt or sand handy for icy patches. Ensure that shoes or boots with non-slip soles are available for safer footing during winter conditions.

By following these simple steps, you can make your home a safe and cozy haven for the fall and winter months. At Visiting Angels, we work closely with seniors and their families to ensure their homes are prepared for seasonal changes, providing assistance with everything from light housekeeping to companionship and mobility support.

Together, we can ensure your home remains a safe and welcoming environment throughout the colder seasons.

Seasonal Home Care for Newton and Greater Boston Families

The holiday season is upon us ā€“ whether you celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanza, Solstice, or New Yearā€™s - with winter just around the corner. ā€˜Tis a joyous season for friends and family, but it is also a time when we find ourselves overbooked and spread thin. When you have an aging loved one who needs your attention, that holiday stress is compounded. This is true for both adult children and their aging parents. Seasonal home care assistance can be a great help for Greater Boston families with elderly loved ones.

Holiday Stress

Perhaps Mom is normally self-sufficient and can organize her routine and keep her house in order with minimal help from the family. But to prepare for the holiday season, she will have gifts to buy and wrap, family events to attend, social events to attend, meals to cook, and more. Suddenly, her daily routine is disrupted and she needs help to cope with the extra activity. As she might tell you, sheā€™s not as young as she used to be!

The holiday season is just as busy for adult children, and things can get complicated if your parent relies on family visits for company. The effects of socialization on senior health canā€™t be underestimated. Isolation can lead to problems including depression, health issues and cognitive decline. If your senior relies on your visits for social interaction, add that to the growing list of responsibilities you have this holiday season.

And that describes the way Don lives his life. Heā€™s long made helping others a purpose and passion.

One way is by facilitating a grief support group for those struggling with the loss of a loved one.

How to help older adults with holiday blues: Dos and donā€™ts, according to experts

Here's how to deal with holiday blues and make the season magical ā€” not miserable ā€” for your aging loved ones.

ļ»æLoneliness and isolation are worrisome issues for aging adults year-round, but theyā€™re especially problematic during the holiday season. Due to a variety of reasons, a quarter of adults 65 and older are considered socially isolated, and a ā€œsignificant portionā€ of older adults in the U.S. report feeling lonely. The American Psychological Association notes that during the holidays, those numbers may be amplified, thanks to the ā€œholiday blues.ā€

What are the holiday blues? Theyā€™re feelings of irritability, fatigue and sadness that can spike during the holiday season. But knowing how to care for and support your older loved ones in small ways can help reduce some of that loneliness and help you connect with them on a deeper level.
