How did you become involved with SMILES and how long have you been volunteering?
I needed a new focus in life after losing my beloved husband after a long illness in December, 2018. A friend said you love animals and kids, go check out SMILES. I think I began in the Spring Session of 2019 and have counted it a true blessing in my life.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in LaSalle County, Illinois. I grew up on a family farm with 3 sisters. My poor father was a farmer who had no sons! I much preferred chores to housework and loved taking care of the pigs and a few beef cattle. My first vehicle was the honey wagon and the old H tractor that pulled the feed grinder to the other family farms.
Who is your favorite horse at SMILES and why?
The late Junior was my first favorite horse. He was a wonderful horse. Rodney is my favorite horse . He is the sweetest horse I have ever met. He’s just so patient and kind and loves affection and attention from everyone. I love every horse in the herd more all the time as they reveal their personalities and teach me every day. They each have a special place in my heart.
Do you have a favorite SMILES event? If you are new, which event are you most interested in attending?
Like most people, I love the Student Horse Show. It’s so rewarding to watch our clients confidently perform the skills they worked hard to master in class in front of their families and friends. Handing out trophies and congratulations is the best assignment ever! I also love Miles for Smiles, the Golf Outing, and rec rides.
Is there anything else you'd like your fellow volunteers to know?
My favorite memories volunteering at Smiles are the incredible friendships I have found with humans and the herd. Smiles is remarkable in many ways because it stems from a shared purpose born of love and service by all who sign on. I am ever grateful for our incredible instructors, staff and mentors who are endlessly patient and generous. I hope to pay those gifts forward to new volunteers.
