Bobbi Goldin (CIYT Level 3)
Setubandha sarvangasana - A pose for all the body
I love sharing this pose often! It opens the chest, tones the legs, strengthens the buttocks, and strengthens the pelvic floor. The block can be higher or lower.

When I started the Yoga Insitute of Miami 43 years ago, we were the first Iyengar Yoga studio in Florida and I believe I was the first certified instructor in Florida.

When we went to Zoom, I changed the name to Yoga Miami - Bobbi Goldin. It has been a journey of great joy and fun with love. A blessing!

Lessons from Bobbi
by Tora Bueno

My first impression of Miami was everyone wore heels and makeup, spoke Spanish, and drove clean new cars.

The Yoga Institute was in my neighborhood. Outside sat a 1990s Toyota Prius with a Coexist and cat lover stickers. Inside, the walls were covered with photos of a curly-haired blonde through the ages: doing trikonasana on the Great Wall of China, posing by lily pads with Mr. Iyengar, also lilac paint, ceramics, Ganesh t-shirts and tie-dyed leggings for sale. The owner Bobbi Goldin had a perfect gold pedicure and matching tan. She taught me to give thanks for all the good in my life and to accept thanks for the good I did. She taught me to put on my big girl panties and love Miami.

October in Florida

Those of us in South Florida don’t feel much with seasonal changes. There are subtle changes such as the slight drop in humidity that brings hope for cooler temperatures in the months to come. After the brilliant show of leaves in the north brings the browns and grays of winter, we experience a whole new blooming of plants and flowers full of color against blue skies. As most of the country is winding down for the winter and falling into their hibernation mode, we are gearing up for a busier season. Snowbirds arrive to fill up spaces in classes and enjoy their winter in a sunny paradise. Regular students’ schedules open up to attend more regularly after summer vacations to cooler destinations.

October Focus at the Yoga Institute

During the month of October, our students are having fun learning the Sanskrit names of the poses. Each week student receives a practice sequence that accompanies a list of the asana names in Sanskrit and English. The classes for the week are based on the practice sequence appropriate for the various level of students and classes. Repeating the names out loud, seeing the word and doing the pose has been helpful. It’s never too late to learn asana or Sanskrit!

Rosa Santana (CIYT Level 3)
I discovered Iyengar Yoga in 1995 in Hallandale Beach when my aerobics teacher didn’t show up. Reluctantly, I walked into a small room with bikes on one side. I wasn’t going to stay, but two senior citizens and a tiny woman with a sweet smile welcomed me and asked if I was there for the yoga class. The teacher was Marilyn Rubin, and I had no idea this class would shape me for the rest of my life.

Just Be Friendly…
Every morning, over the past year and more, CIYTs Stephanie Dodge and Juli Kagan have reached out to each other by text message with the greeting: “Good morning 💚🌴.”  It is a sentiment shared in honor of their love of Yoga Sutra 1:33 and the first word in the sutra, MaitrÄ«, pronounced “my tree,” meaning friendliness.

They have been calling each other MaitrÄ« to honor their joy of learning together and sharing their love of sacred texts and the profound teachings those texts offer. To Stephanie and Juli one of the most important lessons they have learned is simple: Just Be Friendly.

In Yoga Sutra 1:33, Patanjali offers a method of achieving an open heart and a calm mind; by being friendly to those who are happy, compassionate to those who are hurting, joyful to those who embody noble qualities and indifferent to those whose vices oppose your own values. (Stephanie & Juli)

Stephanie and Juli teach at iYogaDelrayBeach.com. When you join them for class, you are sure to be greeted with abundant friendliness!
Laura Plofchan (CIYT)
Did you see God?
I love to teach back bends especially those with the support of the chair. I enjoy watching the process that my students go through. First in the preparation of releasing the groins, stabilizing the pelvis, elongating the side body, and strengthening shoulders and upper back. When they actually find themselves in poses like: dhanurasana, chair viparita dandasana, and urdhva dhanurasana … it all comes together. I ask my students “Did you see God?”

Laura currently serves as the Vice President of IYASE.

Stephanie Weisenberg, CIYT
As a mother of a 13 year-old daughter I never know what each day will bring. The one constant is getting on my mat each morning. One day after I drove her to school I decided to have fun with her Squishmallows. I took a Squishmallow from her bedroom and put it into Sirsasana and Gomukhasana and took photos, then texted them to her during the day. She had a good laugh. More by Stephanie here.
Stephanie is a CIYT in Plantation, Florida. She has studied under Ruth Ann Bradley and Colleen Gallagher. Stephanie teachers at the Yoga Institute of Broward. You can e-mail her here.
