Hello Friends!

Our website was transitioned to our new host, Wix.com earlier this month. Here are some updates:

• Atlantaknittingguild.org is operational and you will notice the site loads faster. We have a few pages up and we're updating the home page with our progress.
• Member contact information has been added to the website but we still need to associate your member account with your actual AKG membership in the backend of the website. Wix refers to memberships as 'subscriptions' so be on the look out for:
• an email stating you've ordered a plan or 'subscription plan'
• and email stating you have received a verification code for the website (from "Atlanta Knitting Gui" - for some reason our name is getting cut off)
• we'll be working on this process one member at a time so if you haven't received your emails yet, that's ok
• your old website password will not work but you will have the opportunity to reset it
• We'll be using the new blog available on the website to provide updates and share information that would have otherwise required us to build new webpages on the website. Blog posts will be password protected and you will need to be a member and logged in to view those posts.
• We'll be adding the most current items and news to the website and working our way backwards - so the latest information will be migrated first.

We hope to have the site fully functional by the end of October. Since we're still in the transition, here are some reminders:

• Our calendar of events is temporarily parked here, on a google calendar. Once we fully transition to the new website, that URL will likely change. Here are the events and activities that are scheduled for the month of October:
• Social Knitting (Zoom) with Velera: Tuesdays - Oct 8, 15, 22, 29 (reg link) - registering for one session will give you the ability to attend all of them using the same link.

You may remember that we spent much of the summer reducing our items in storage (library and yarn) because Dunwoody Parks & Rec notified us of their plans to renovate the storage area in the annex. All groups were asked to remove their stored items. We're still waiting for that work to be completed. As such, we have no official storage for the Guild, other than the basements and dining rooms of Guild board members. We ask that you help us keep our schlepping to a minimum by not bringing extra items or donations that might need to be stored between meetings, just until we resolve our storage situation at the annex. Thank you!

2024 - 2025 Volunteers

We are still in need of volunteers:

• Meeting Coordination: 2-3 members to help set up the room in the Dunwoody Annex (arriving 30 minutes early at 6pm). We never know what the room setup will be when we arrive so volunteers should be prepared to shift tables and help set up the projector. 1-2 members willing to learn how to set up the computer would be great.
• Shop/Community Liaison: 2-3 members to help brainstorm and foster more community engagement within our region. That could mean working with local yarn stores to promote the Guild and brainstorming activities to attract new makers to the knitting craft.
• Special Events: 2-3 members to help with non-monthly programs and events. We’d love to have travel programs, a yarn crawl, and could likely collaborate with other fiber-ly groups with some attention to this effort.

Recap from September:

Big thank yous to Debra Davis, Anne Aedevaux, Kathy Borden, and Julie Uranis for sharing their expertise at our September meeting! I heard many exclamations of delight during the meeting. Members left with a new trick or two, ready to try.

October Meeting: Please note it is the second Thursday!

Several members have requested a program about crochet. Even if you don’t plan to make a granny square afghan, knowing crochet basics can be a big help. There’s nothing quite like a single-crochet border to clean up an unruly edge on a piece of knitting. Some maneuvers in knitting might be easier with a crochet hook. Please bring a size 5.5 - 6.0 mm crochet hook to the meeting if you plan to practice on site. Some hooks will also be available at the meeting. Board members Natalie Greene and Swaantje Sass will be our presenters!

November Meeting:

With holiday shopping in mind, our November meeting is a shop night. We have invited local shops and vendors. This is a chance to shop small and local, as well as discover some truly special finds! We currently expect:

Knitantics — specializing in silk.

Finnished Knits — “My shop focuses on Nordic yarn brands, and my goal is to provide affordable wool options. My cornerstone yarns are just $8.99/100g skein. I also have tools and notions that I find helpful, and patterns from Finnish designers. I joke that everything in my shop is my favorite because I only carry things I love and use myself.”

While we are actively recruiting shops to participate, encouraging your LYS to participate would be great! Please have them contact programs@atlantaknittingguild.org to reserve space.

December Meeting:

This will be our traditional holiday potluck party. The guild will provide a meat platter. Members are invited to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert (potluck sign up form coming soon). Also, we will have a gift exchange. If you would like to participate, please bring a wrapped knitterly-gift (e.g. yarn, knitting tool, knitting book, wine glass with knitting joke on it) with a value of about $25.

January Meeting:

Have you seen advertisements for fiber tours? Susan Duralde will tell us about a fiber tour of Scotland, the Hebrides, and Fair Isle she took in summer 2024. Susan’s presentation will help us appreciate these far-off wool-friendly places and possibly inspire future travel, too!

We are thrilled to announce that the fabulous Kate Atherley will be joining us in person for our Superstar weekend of classes next March! As many of you know, we have hosted Kate for several Thursday evening talks via Zoom. She is now back to traveling and we’re so excited to have her here, as she is a wealth of knowledge and a terrific instructor! Stay tuned for class details and more information to come.

Debbie Held is a local superstar spinner and writer. She will share her deep knowledge about what makes a great knitting yarn.

Save the Date - January 12 Workshop

Our own Phyllis Bell Miller will present “Making Color Work for You: The Professional Guide to Understanding Color & Creating Exciting Color Schemes” on Sunday 12 January 2025 from 1-4 PM at the annex. Pricing and sign-ups upcoming (hopefully next month).

Does selecting colors make you curdle? Are you dumbfounded by the dozens of color choices out there? This workshop shows you how to cut through the confusion and turn color into a valuable tool. Using a color of your choice, you will complete hands-on exercises as we explore essential color principles and learn how to use color groups, undertones, value keys, Goethe’s color ratios, and more than 30 traditional and new color schemes.

The workshop also explains how to identify and build historic and ethnic color schemes, how to track color trends, and how to capture and match colors as professionals do. Information in this workshop applies to all design areas, including knitting, crochet, quilting, sewing, embroidery, wardrobe planning, and decorating.

The extensive handout contains information and charts that you can use to plan and execute future projects. As a bonus, you can purchase a kit to assemble a color wheel composed of yarn pompoms. This is an invaluable aid for creating and testing color schemes and combinations.

Items Needed During the Workshop: An item in the color that you wish to explore during the workshop (yarn, fabric, clothing or accessory item, etc.); pencil and eraser; and calculator.

Skill Level: All skill levels.

Color-Wheel Kit Contents:

• Pre-cut yarn for making 17 pompoms
• hook-and-loop
• self-adhesive dots to attach pompoms to color wheel chart
• one Clover Pom-Pom Maker Kit (Small: 1 3/8” and 1 5/8”)

This is our big regional festival. If there is anything fiber arts related that you need, this is the place to find it! There are lots of regional vendors and small businesses that appreciate the support. It also has an inspiring skein and garment show. If you want to spin, there’s a fleece show. And the farmers bring the animals. You can buy a fleece on the hoof!

KALs are an opportunity to knit with friends, try a new technique, and observe just how different the same pattern can be. Change the gauge, change the yarn, change the needle: any one results in a completely different look. AKG KAL’s have a common, suitable-for-TV-watching pattern. Everyone picks their own colors and yarns, and progresses at their own speed.There is a monthly evening Zoom meeting to catch up with each other, share progress and ask questions. The moderators (Corrie and Kathy) are available via email for any questions. You can also join the facebook group to stay on top of the AKG KALs.

Knit and Crochet Bear Sweaters: The GA Center for Child Advocacy

Bears are available for taking home to outfit at every meeting.

This is a longstanding program with the AKG. The GA Center for Child Advocacy is seeking knit and crochet sweaters for the Build-a-Bears that they give to each child in crisis who comes to the center. Please knit and crochet sweaters to fit a 15-18” tall bear. Any yarn fiber is fine, however, the items should be new (odorless/clean). Feel free to attach a tag with your name and/or the knitting guild’s name if you choose. If you’d like to donate NEW 15-18” bears, that would be great, too. I will be at every meeting collecting your wonderful donations. Bear Patterns are available on our website: Member Dashboard, Charity Knitting. Remember - if you are purchasing bears or other stuffed animals for the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy, please purchase NEW stuffed animals and bring them to a monthly meeting. 

Baby Hat & Blanket Sets, Chemo Caps: Northside Hospital

If you would like to donate knit and crochet items to Northside Hospital, please follow these guidelines: Special Care Nurseries: There is a need for full-term baby hats (12” around by 5”-5.5” long) and blankets (19”x21” or 20”x24”). The baby blankets and baby hats are placed into a care package that goes home with each mom and baby once the baby is ready to leave the hospital. Use any patterns you prefer but avoid adding choking hazards such as pom poms, tassels, buttons, or any other embellishments that can come off and cause a problem. Use soft, acrylic baby yarn (avoid using yarn with wool or anything itchy or fuzzy). Any color yarn is great except for yellow. A solid yellow hat or blanket makes the baby look jaundiced. Some accents of yellow are ok. No need to wash the items unless there’s a smoker or pets in the house. Please put your baby hats and blankets in a plastic bag with a note inside indicating your name, the Atlanta Knitting Guild, and how much time it took to make your items.



We will also be donating hats/caps to Northside’s adult & child cancer/chemo patients. Use soft yarn/avoid wool and other scratchy fibers. Any pattern and color is fine. 

If you want other knitters to know how to support an organization you care about with knitted items, email information including the nonprofits' name, mission, website and the type of knitted items they collect with any requirements, and we'll add it to our website.
