Paul Jaboulet AÎnÊ Parallèle 45 Côtes Du Rhône Blanc 2019
In search of that perfect white wine for winter. To some, that would seem an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp, plastic silverware, or a working vacation—hearty wine for hunkering down for winter to many means robust red wine. But the white wine devotee knows there are hearty white wines, rich, lush, full-bodied wines with high alcohol that can stand up to hearty dishes. Rhone white wine checks all these boxes. This may also explain why the white wines of the Rhone Valley see a spike in popularity, to the point where supply/wineries can’t keep up with demand.
The Rhone Valley is mainly associated with red wine, with over 6,000 growing estates. White Rhones only make up for 6% of production (Rose represents 10%.). Originally white wines were considered to be superior to red in many Rhone appellations. Cyrus Redding, the author of â€˜A History and Description of Modern Wines’ in 1833, believed that white Hermitage was ‘the best white wine in France…and it keeps longer than the red’. It is the relative rarity of these superb whites, a group of whites that tend to carry a little more weight and flavor concentration compared to those of northern France, but they aren’t heavy or clumsy. Dancing the line between lush and crisp, these wines are perfect for when temperatures drop.
Since 1834 Paul Jaboulet Aine has been synonymous with quality wine in the Rhone. Antione Jaboulet planted vineyards on the hill Hermitage, named after the crusader Knight Gaspard who retired there as a hermit to recover from his wounds in 1224. In fact, Jaboulet owns the famous Chapel on Hermitage, built-in 1235, and is the second-largest owner of vineyards in Hermitage. The business was passed down from generation to generation, expanding as they planted more vineyards in other appellations along the Rhone Valley. Having started with the small plot of land in Hermitage, they now have 120 hectares, producing fine wines from twenty-six other appellations, including Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage, Gigondas, Côtes Rotie, Condrieu, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. They also produce some of the best Côtes du Rhone wines, with Parallèle 45 notorious for over-delivering at a great price.
At the beginning of 2006, the Jaboulet was acquired by Jean-Jacques Frey, a real estate tycoon with a track record of running fine estates in Champagne (they owned Ayala before selling to Bollinger and now own a significant stake in Billecart-Salmon). They also purchased Chateau La Lagune in Haut-Medoc in 2000 and Château de Corton AndrÊ in Burgundy in 2014. Caroline Frey, the daughter of Jean-Jacques, is the winemaker and viticulturist for Paul Jaboulet AÎnÊ and is fast becoming one of the top winemakers in France. Following biodynamic practices and with the installation of a brand new gravity-flow winery, she is producing stunning wines; every year, her wines seem to get better while respecting the local terroir.
The wine Parallele 45 takes its name from the 45th North Parallel, which runs one mile from the cellars of Maison Paul Jaboulet Aine In the village of Pont de l’Isere, just 5 miles south of the Tain Hermitage (Town Hermitage). The wine has had this name since the beginning of the 1950s and is best known for its youthful, crowd-pleaser Cote du Rhone Rouge. The real gem, in my opinion, of Jaboulet’s Parallel 45 wines is their lesser-known Cotes du Rhone Blanc.
Jaboulet’s White Cotes du Rhone is a lively mineral-laced wine is sourced exclusively from two family farms with over twenty-five-year-old vines. The Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc, from the Southern Rhone, bring roundness and creamy tannins to the wine. The Marsanne and Viognier bring solid structure, freshness, and floral notes. All these grape varieties are well integrated and offer a perfect balance. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and was aged for 3 months, 50% in neutral oak barrels for added complexity.
From The Winery
A lively mineral-laced Rhone white, with wet stones and laser pure white fruit in a lip-smacking and succulent white. Delivers the elegance and texture of the finest cool-climate white wines.
Accolades
Named after the 45th Parallel, which crosses the RhĂ´ne Valley, this is an organic blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Viognier, and Bourboulenc. Attractive notes of honey and ripe citrus with floral, herbaceous, and nutty notes across the nose and palate. Vibrant acidity balances the richness and weight of the palate with a lingering finish. This Week's Wine Insider Offer
Paul Jaboulet AÎnÊ Parallèle 45 Côtes Du Rhône Blanc 2019

Part of the reason I was pointed in the direction to write about this wine is that it is one of our Wine Director’s favorite wines. When it came to tasting this wine, I enlisted the help of Tim Gunderman. While most of the rest of us appreciate good white wine, he unabashedly loves French White wines. He is my to guy for suggestions on Loire, Bordeaux, and Rhone whites, and he has never steered me wrong. This wine opened up with heady notes of floral and citrus fruits with a touch of honey. Weighty on the palate, rich in flavors, whetstone minerality with noticeable acids, with an amazingly long finish. This is the type of wine that brought a big smile to Tim’s face and mine. This is precisely the type of wine we need to get us through these last snowstorms or even enjoy in that next 60 degree day. This wine is an excellent example of why Rhone Whites are enjoying such popularity amongst casual drinkers. Don’t hesitate; due to the unwarranted popularity of these blurbs, we will most likely sell out.
