STEM Sports® recently applied for a Beyond Sport Global Award for Quality Education. Beyond Sport is a global organization that promotes, supports and celebrates the use of sport to address social issues in communities around the world. They do this through convening, supporting and advising the worlds of sport, business, government, and development on how sport can be used as a tool to achieve both social and business objectives.
Since our founding in 2016, we have focused on giving students a quality education through active learning and something that kids enjoy - sports. Our mission aligns well with the Beyond Sports Award for Quality Education.
STEM Sports® is excited for the award prospects and will once again be attending the Beyond Sport Global Award events in New York City in September.
On July 3rd, the Sport and STEM Alliance, a division of Beyond Sport, featured STEM Sports® in their international e-bulletin and on their website. Please take a moment to read the profile by clicking below:

University of Michigan:
Tackling Equity and Inclusion In STEM
Racial and gender discrepancies in the field of STEM education has long been an enigma in the academic realm, and unfortunately, without much success to counter the issue. However, recently the University of Michigan and Professor Tim McKay (Physics/Astronomy/Education) and his colleagues attempted to live out the saying “It takes a village”. By bringing together ten (10) universities that recognize the importance of “diversity” to level the playing field, students may now relish and experience their love for STEM.
In addition to U-M, some of these schools include:
Michigan State University, Arizona State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of California: Irvine and Davis
; encompassing about 350,000 students. Of the 350,000 students, approximately 75,000 or 21% enroll in introductory courses annually, which is where professors/researchers say the problem originated. STEM students in the past “have been weeded out” if he/she could not, in a sense, thrive academically in prerequisite STEM courses. McKay says, “professors have simply accepted excusing students who cannot get through introductory STEM courses, creating a system that is broken”.
By adopting a “strength in numbers” methodology through monetary support of $1 million from the
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
, the
Sloan Equity and Inclusion in STEM Introductory Courses (SEISMIC) Project
was established and implemented. The Foundation will predominately support operating costs for the next 3 years, with the chief objective to ascertain “new” national assessment principles of the SEISMIC project to ensure qualitative measures. The project has already had a positive impact for students and communities alike.
A key driver of SEISMIC is to support and provide all students with equitable and sustainable resources from the outset, such as acknowledgement of each student’s background, interests, and goals to create a “personalized communication tool known as
ECoach
”. Subsequently, instructors can effectively provide guidance of “how to study, where and when to seek help, how to respond to poor test scores, and to see struggle as profitable on the road to success.” To-date, the communication tool is used by more than 5,000 students at the University of Michigan and UC Santa Barbara. A great step in the right direction.
In sum, the ability to close the inequality gap “takes a village” not only as it relates to this project, but throughout all walks-of-life. At STEM Sports®, we will continue to do our part to provide a window of opportunity for each young mind with a passion and love for STEM.

Former NBA player Steven Hunter invited us to pass along a bit of STEM Basketball knowledge at his camp in Gilbert, Arizona back in May. The campers were introduced to our STEM Basketball lesson that features shot tracking, shooting percentages, and the use of technology that's related to shooting.
"Amazing presentation by STEM Sports®. The kids really enjoyed it and learned a lot", said Steven.
While Steven's camp focused on basketball, we were happy to impart some education which was well received by his eager campers.
