Partnership Spotlight - Skyhawks Sports
|
|
In our Q1 Newsletter, we shared a new partnership that was formed with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. In this newsletter, we’re happy to report on a new collaboration with Skyhawks Sports. Skyhawks is the country's leader in providing a safe, fun, and skill-based sports experience for kids between the ages of 4 and 14. Through our partnership, Skyhawks will continue to offer after school programs and sports camps and in addition to those offerings, their coaches will instruct our STEM-based curricula at their locations throughout the U.S., specifically in 25 states and they’re growing. In fact, in
Entrepreneur’s
2nd annual Fastest-Growing Franchises ranking, Skyhawks Franchise Group has been named the top youth sports franchise and #117 overall of the top 150 companies who are “leveraging their ability to scale fast.” After increasing 107 places on
Entrepreneur’s
Franchise 500® ranking and having substantial growth in 2018, it makes sense that Skyhawks would place as one of the fastest-growing franchises in the world. We’re thrilled to partner with Skyhawks Sports and know the addition of our curriculum programs will be a game changer!

Under Pressure to Always Improve
|
|
STEM Soccer Curriculum Module 5.0 has been enhanced and is now Module 5.1. Originally, this module taught kids how to tune a soccer ball to achieve optimal performance and minimize injuries using a digital app called
Ball Tune
. It now allows the students to learn the same important concepts by using a pressure gauge. This gives children the opportunity to be even more involved in the learning process and take their understanding of the concept to greater lengths.

We love hearing from teachers and administrators about their experience implementing our STEM curriculum kits. Here is what some educators have said about us so far this year:
“
We honed in to fourth grade students and had an overwhelming response. The curriculum is so much fun! The fourth grade students absolutely love it. They are practicing STEM without even knowing it!”
*PRO TIP - This teacher used an 8th grade student to instruct and administer the STEM Basketball curriculum.
*Pro
"This curriculum is a game-changer for all of our afterschool and soon-to-be summer camp participants!"

Not Our News (NON)
NBA Legend - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: STEM Supporter and Advocate
|
|
The STEM sphere is far and wide. In our continual efforts to become a trusted and reliable resource to our constituency, STEM Sports® will introduce news, stories and other content that we fill is valuable to each and every one of you in the NON, or Not Our News segment. After all, it's not all about us. Enjoy!
The majority of basketball fans think of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as a Hall-of-Famer with a devastating skyhook. Yet Jabbar’s greatness goes far beyond the basketball court, and directly to underserved communities.
Most recently, the NBA legend continued his support of STEM education by giving close to $3 million through the sale of several prolific basketball awards, which included: four championship rings, an all-star ring, an MVP trophy, and an autographed basketball. Based on the following quote, education is, and has been, an integral part of his legacy:
"
Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future.
That’s a history that has no price.” – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Be sure to follow us on our social media channels as, like our quarterly newsletter, we provide valuable information about STEM that we all care about! To connect with us on those channels, scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter to access those links. Thank you!

STEM Sports® Takes Mexico City!
|
|
On March 30th, STEM Sports® CEO Jeff Golner made a trip down to Mexico City to implement our STEM curriculum on behalf of HandsOn Mexico. HandsOn is a non-profit organization that focuses on the betterment of communities and youth support. They are based out of Atlanta, Georgia but have satellite organizations across the United States and internationally.
Over 150 children from the Club de Niños y Niñas (CNyN/Boys & Girls Club) came to the brand new club to learn STEM concepts through the use of sports. American Express employees volunteered to help facilitate the event and the curriculum instruction.
Jeff was there to give the volunteers instructions on how to conduct each module prior to the event and acted as a lead facilitator throughout the entire day.
“It was an outstanding event. The debate now is who was rewarded the most: the Club’s youth members or the colleagues from American Express,” said Jeff.
The volunteers taught the children using STEM lessons derived from our STEM Basketball, STEM Football, STEM Soccer and STEM Volleyball curricula.
STEM Sports® feels extremely lucky to have been able to be a part of such an amazing opportunity. Upon finishing the day camp, STEM Sports® left the curriculum and all of the supplies with CNyN so the children will be able to learn STEM now and in the future.

We know that there are schools and organizations that sometimes cannot afford materials, curriculum and other means necessary to help their students. At STEM Sports®, we do our best to find a path to funding, grants or other means so that schools have a way to enable their classrooms with our curriculum.
DonorsChoose.org empowers public school teachers from across the country to request much-needed materials and experiences for their students. Visit the site to find a project that inspires you. They create a great way
for schools and students to receive proper instructional supplies in the classroom.
And, if you need some support to help in the funding of STEM Sports® curricula, we think that DonorsChoose.org is a very wise choice.
