Celebrating Biomedical Research Awareness Day
More than 70 people attended the annual Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) celebration at the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute on the Jupiter campus.

This year's keynote speaker was Lawrence Toll, Ph.D., professor of biomedical science, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, and member of the FAU Brain Institute, who presented “The Opioid Epidemic and What We Can Do About It.”
Road to R1 Initiative: Division of Research Faculty Associate
The Division of Research Associate designation is a title held by an instructor in recognition of research and scholarly activities performed, in addition to primary teaching assignments.

Obtaining this title requires the instructor is engaged in significant research outcome and undergraduate student research. In support of the Road to R1, the university has committed to provide funding for this initiative for three years. Assignments are given out in collaboration with each Dean.

In existence for less than a year, the initiative is already celebrating success: we congratulate Judy Monestime, DBA, instructor in the College of Business, who recently earned the National Institute of Health's Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15).

"The Research Associate appointment was very instrumental for this! I appreciate all the support from the Division of Research," Monestime said.
All Hands Supporting Businesses in Broward County
The Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at FAU is collaborating with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Broward County, Career Source Broward and North Miami, and other local agencies to provide support to businesses impacted by the weather disaster.

The Florida SBDC at FAU offers consulting for disaster preparedness and guidance to obtain capital for business continuity.

Announcement from the National Science Foundation
Effective April 24, 2023, the National Science Foundation (NSF) transitioned the Subawarding, Transferring or Contracting Out Part of an NSF Award request functionality from FastLane to Research.gov and decommissioned this request in FastLane. In-progress subawarding requests in FastLane as of April 21, 2023, were transferred to Research.gov. All notifications and requests submitted in FastLane are accessible in Research.gov. Award recipients can access the notifications and requests module in Research.gov via the Notifications & Requests link under Awards & Reporting on the Research.gov homepage (formerly known as the Research.gov "My Desktop" page) after signing into Research.gov. Affiliate Postdoctoral Scholars
Working closely with the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPDA) recently created the Affiliate Postdoctoral Fellow designation. The Affiliate Postdoctoral Fellow at FAU is defined as a postdoctoral scholar who has been awarded an externally sponsored fellowship or traineeship for postdoctoral studies, and the sponsor supports the postdoc exclusively and provides their financial support directly to the postdoctoral scholar.

The process to assign this appointment is similar to the Affiliate Faculty appointment, but it has its own distinct forms, required documentation, and is routed through the OPDA. The Affiliate Postdoctoral Fellow is not an employee of FAU, nor are they eligible for any benefits provided by the university. However, the Affiliate Postdoctoral Scholar is authorized to work on campus under the advisement of a designated FAU faculty member, serving as their mentor.

All departments must obtain authorization by their chairs, deans and the OPDA before offering an appointment.

Individual postdoctoral fellowships are competitive and prestigious. This is a wonderful reflection of the quality of FAU research, where postdoctoral fellows choose to conduct research and additional training.

For more information, send an email to the OPDA

The work of Laurent Cherubin, Ph.D., research professor, FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, is featured in the latest Nature documentary called "Treasure of the Caribbean."

"Our film follows the discovery of a vast coral reef in Belize and Guatemala, that marks an exciting new chapter in understanding corals and fish spawning aggregations, and the battle to save coral reefs and reef fishes, like the Nassau grouper, around the world," Cherubin said.
