Blossoming Business Professionals and Niche Companies
FAU has created a robust ecosystem for entrepreneurship, an environment that empowers business professionals to grow and helps their unique ventures flourish.
“We see entrepreneurism as an extension of the academic research mission, and we want it to be a continuum,” said Daniel Flynn, Ph.D., vice president for research. “So we start from the earliest phases where a person has an idea and help them turn that idea into a company, and then see it translate into the real world and grow.”
FAU has strategically positioned numerous programs to assist entrepreneurs at all steps of their journey, creating an atmosphere that has already helped more than 70 companies go from idea to success.

Collecting Blacktip Shark Tales
Stephen Kajiura
, Ph.D., an internationally renowned shark researcher at FAU, is taking advantage of the current annual migration of blacktip sharks along South Florida's coast, by tracking their migration story.
Kajiura and his team are capturing and measuring detailed information on the sharks' activity through reusable radio and satellite sensors
attached to their dorsal fins. Data from these “shark diaries” reveal activities like how often they swish their tail, what depth they prefer to inhabit, and even their favorite time of the day to get close to the beach.

International Companies at Research Park
The Research Park at FAU, a well-established engine of economic growth in South Florida, is looking to broaden its horizons in the years ahead.
“The university has begun to be much more active in its efforts to interact worldwide, and we want to support that,” said Andrew Duffell, the park’s president. “We want companies everywhere to understand that it’s not necessary for them to relocate their headquarters facilities here. They could establish small research units that align with the interests of FAU researchers.” Of course, larger organizations are also welcome to join the park’s roster of heavy hitters, which includes five-time Inc. 5000 honoree Modernizing Medicine.

New Behavior Details of Bottlenose Dolphins
Researchers from
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute
and collaborators recently conducted the most extensive radio-tracking effort of bottlenose dolphins in the Indian River Lagoon using radio-telemetry.
Their findings,
published in the journal
Aquatic Mammals
, reveal new and surprising information about how bottlenose dolphins use their habitats, how they spend their time and how they interact with their own species, and
emphasize the value of radio-telemetry as an important method to consistently observe, track and monitor the dolphins in close proximity over time.
