Collaboration Aims to Treat Strokes

Two researchers have developed a breakthrough procedure for stroke that significantly reduces stroke-related disability and death with an FDA-approved drug called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF). GCSF could be a powerful growth factor because of its ability to preserve the central nervous system, suppress cell death and at the same time elicit neurogenesis as well as angiogenesis, according to researchers Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., left, professor of biomedical science at FAU's Schmidt College of Medicine and member of FAU's Brain Institute, and Brian Snelling, M.D., chief of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery and medical director of the Marilyn and Stanley Barry Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute and Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Marine Renewable Energy Director Highlights Ocean Energy

Gabriel Alsenas, director of Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center and director of core facilities for FAU's Division of Research, was recently appointed treasurer for the International Electrotechnical Commission for Renewable Energy, which is an international certification and assessment body that regulates wind, solar and marine equipment technical standard applications.

Alsenas also testified before the Florida House Energy and Utilities subcommittee about ocean energy, where he spoke about his ocean-current clean energy project in Lake Worth.
New Tool Gauges Rural Older Adults' Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge

Researchers from FAU's College of Nursing recently developed a tool called "Basic Knowledge of Alzheimer's Disease (AD)" (BKAD), to address the need to measure and assess AD knowledge in rural and underserved communities. The survey, published in Aging & Mental Health Journal, consists of 32 items based on topics related to symptoms, risk factors, screening, prevention, treatment and care. READ MORE .
Neuroscientist Hosts Annual Cavefish Meeting

Alex Keene, Ph.D., left, an associate professor of biological sciences in  the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science,  recently organized the sixth annual Astyanax International Meeting in Mexico, bringing together international labs to present and discuss research that utilizes cavefish as a model system for understanding the genetic basis of trait evolution.

Johanna Kowalko, Ph.D., middle, and Erik Duboue, Ph.D., both assistant professors of biology in the  Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College  and trainees from the Cavefish Tri-Lab presented their research using the blind Mexican cavefish. READ MORE.
