Math Models Show Potential Elimination of COVID-19

As COVID-19 spread through the world, governments were faced with a choice between shutting down economies or remaining open.

In a new study published in the Journal of Biological Dynamics, author Necibe Tuncer, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of mathematical sciences, Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, and collaborators, are the first to introduce a novel mathematical framework to study the interplay between infectious diseases, human behavior and economic growth. Faculty Spotlight: Discovering Lost Voices

By studying the literary works from Black marginalized authors, Maria Alejandra Aguilar Dornelles, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, said her research builds a better narrative around those who were marginalized throughout the Black Atlantic, which is the history of the African descent from Africa to Europe, the Caribbean and the Americas.

Testing Marine Turbines

In addition to solar or wind power, there’s another promising renewable energy that harnesses ocean currents — underwater turbines. Developing and testing that technology to help bring power from these currents to our communities is the goal of FAU’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC), according to Gabriel Alsenas, director of SNMREC.
