Malcolm McFarland, Ph.D., a research associate at FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) is at the forefront of the ongoing effort to detect new toxic algal blooms and develop ways of combating them.
He specializes in the study of marine phytoplankton populations in both saltwater and freshwater environments. He is also a part of the HBOI team that is developing a revolutionary new underwater holographic microscope under a major multi-year grant from the National Science Foundation.

Survivorship in Danger
A recent study by Annie Page-Karjian, Ph.D., found that 75 percent of green sea turtles with an infectious tumor-causing disease did not survive even after rehabilitation, regardless of whether or not tumor regrowth occurred.
Page-Karjian is an assistant research professor from FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.

Choosing the Best Pain Reliever
To help patients and health care providers choose the right pain relievers, researchers from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine examined the benefits and risks of over-the-counter medication for pain relief such as Aspirin, Tylenol and other non-aspirin relievers.
Their evidence suggests that healthcare providers and their patients should make individual clinical judgments based on the entire risk factor profile of the patient.

'Only One' Performance
Abigail Howard, senior in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, is the writer and co-director of 'Only One,' a 45-minute play based on the lives of three human trafficking victims and their struggle to break free.
Following the play, a panel of community experts lead a question and answer session on human trafficking.
