Study Examines Connection Between Oral Health and Preterm Birth

Growing evidence links periodontal disease in pregnancy to serious complications, including preterm birth, low birth weight, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes—yet oral health remains one of the most overlooked aspects of prenatal care. With support from Colgate, researchers at UCSF and NYU have launched CHEER (Closing Health Equity through Empowering Oral Health for Maternal Wellness).

CHEER tests whether enhanced oral health education—paired with home care kits, personalized guidance, and supportive text messages—can improve gum health and potentially pregnancy outcomes. By focusing on communities facing barriers to dental care, the study aims to generate scalable solutions that integrate oral health into prenatal care and advance maternal health equity.

Improving Black Maternal Health through Patient-Centered Care

Person-centered care is an essential element of safe and high-quality maternity care that supports individual patient needs and values. A new research brief from the UCSF Center for Health Equity reports that only 55% of Black women in California experience optimal person-centered care during childbirth. Using data from the 2023 Maternal and Infant Health Assessment survey, the brief also demonstrates that optimal person-centered care is linked to better breastfeeding, mental health, and care utilization outcomes for Black women. Findings suggest that quality initiatives focused on improving provider communication and patient autonomy could fuel improvements in outcomes and health system costs.
