SCRC'S Caregiver of the Month Spotlight: Cristian Ortiz
“I am caring for my 89-year-old grandmother who lives in La Paz, Mexico. My grandmother is a strong and independent woman that I admire so much. Before I came in contact with SCRC, I did not understand what caregiving was.

I thought I was just providing monetary assistance for my grandmother and did not think much of it. In addition to paying her bills, I also help her set up appointments. But caregiving from a distance has its challenges. Living in different countries makes it difficult to be on top of her medical and emotional needs, such as monitoring medications for low blood pressure, and making sure she is feeling well. Society expects us to provide for our loved ones and never complain or make our elders feel like a burden.
After caring for her for many years now, I noticed how this role was impacting me and how it left me feeling stressed and emotionally drained. In the Mexican culture, emotions are something that we just don’t talk about, especially as a male. Thanks to SCRC I have learned the importance of caring for my mental health as much as I care for my loving grandmother. I am forever grateful to SCRC for educating me how to better care for my grandmother from a distance, especially during this pandemic.”
