Celebrate Kindness in Our Community | | |
Fred Rogers famously reminded us that no matter the uncertainty or the times we are living in, there are always helpers... people who show up, care for others, and make a difference close to home.
We see those helpers every day across our region, and that spirit is at the heart of our annual Kindness Campaign. This season, we invite our community to help recognize individuals of any age (teachers, students, neighbors, friends, or community leaders, etc.) whose everyday acts of kindness make a meaningful difference.

Kindness Award Nominations
Kindness Award nominations are now open through February 10, with honorees recognized during Kindness Week, taking place February 16–23 across our social media channels and on 94KX Radio.

To support participation, we’ve also made Kindness Week toolkits available for schools, libraries, workplaces, and community groups.

Supporting Financial Security Through Free Tax Help
For many working individuals and families, tax season can bring uncertainty and stress. Access to free, reliable tax preparation can make a meaningful difference — helping households keep more of what they earn and plan more confidently for the year ahead.
Through our VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program, Certified IRS Tax Preparers provide free federal, state, and local tax preparation and filing for eligible individuals and families across our region. Appointments are now underway, ensuring neighbors have access to trusted support during tax season
This program is one way we advance Financial Security, one of the building blocks for a strong, stable community.

COMMUNITY IMPACT
Day of Action: Showing Up Together
Each spring, Day of Action brings our community together for one powerful day of service, connection, and impact.
On Friday, April 24, volunteers, employers, and community members will join forces across our five-county region to support local nonprofits through hands-on projects. Last year, more than 390 volunteers supported 37 project sites, demonstrating what’s possible when we work together.
Registration is now open for nonprofits and volunteers who want to be part of this collective effort to strengthen our community.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT
Family Services: Supporting Grandparent Caregivers
For many children in our community, grandparents step in as primary caregivers—providing stability, guidance, and care during critical stages of development.
Through our Grandparents Support Circle, United Way’s Family Services team helps strengthen Youth Opportunity by supporting the adults who are creating safe, nurturing environments for young people to learn and grow. The group offers connection, practical resources, and shared learning for grandparents raising their grandchildren, helping reduce isolation and build confidence in caregiving roles.
When caregivers are supported, children are better positioned to succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally. Programs like this help ensure young people have the consistency and encouragement they need to reach their full potential.

Kindness Week is a community-wide celebration that invites schools, families, workplaces, and community members to practice everyday acts of kindness.
Taking place February 16–20, 2026, the week features daily themes and simple kindness challenges focused on compassion, connection, and belonging. Participation is flexible, with toolkits and resources available for all ages.

Raise the Region is your opportunity to make a real difference in our community.
This 30-hour online giving event helps us fund essential United Way programs that support ALICE households, improve food security, expand STEAM education, offer after-school and summer programs, strengthen recovery efforts through United in Recovery, and improve access to housing and transportation.
