| | Fall Frenzy: Stop Mosquitoes Before They Bite | | |
They're back: pumpkin spice treats, sweater weather, and... mosquitoes. Remember, just because the summer is over doesn't mean mosquitoes are gone from in and around your home. As we gear up for the fall season and changes in weather, now is the time to familiarize yourself with preventative measures.
Why Do Mosquitoes Bite?
Only female mosquitoes bite and they use the protein in your blood to create their eggs. Female mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water (ponds, buckets, tires, pots, plant saucers, even plants with leaves that can hold water like bromeliads or lucky bamboo).
Why Are Mosquitoes So Dangerous?
Mosquitoes are dangerous because they can transmit diseases that can make you sick, like Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and West Nile virus. The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) and the City of Whittier encourage residents to protect against mosquito breeding grounds and limit the number of potential sources in and around your home as the seasons change.
Mosquito control is a shared responsibility, and residents must take an active role in reducing the threat of WNV in our neighborhoods by taking the following steps:
- While it's still fairly dry out, eliminate any standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs, or anything that holds water for more than a week and continue as the weather changes.
-
Ensure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained; report neglected (green) swimming pools in your neighborhood to GLACVCD.
- Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and other small containers weekly.
- Wear insect repellent when outdoors where mosquitoes may be present.
Resources are available, including a home checklist for residents and information on Neighborhood Mosquito Watch programs, via the Vector Control website at www.glamosquito.org.
