September Repair Cafe News

New Ellenville repair cafe organizer John Glagola (above, left) and veteran woodworking repair coach Patrick Murphy (above, right) pose for a photo at Glagola Studios during the inaugural Ellenville Repair Cafe in August. Patrick helped connect John with the RCHV network to get the cafe off the ground AND he also connected RCHV with the Neuland Club whose generous grant helped fund the new cafe and provided funding for the seven other existing cafes in Ulster county.

August was slow but steady with cafes the whole month long. Schenectady was a blast, Kingston was packed and folks reported in with great enthusiasm from the first Ellenville Repair Cafe.

We've got the Post-Cafe Blues

Sometimes it's inevitable to feel sad after a truly great event is over--but one thing that shouldn't be bringing us down? Trying to track down a missing item which was left with a fixer months ago. Or a fixer trying in vain to track down a guest to return a long-fixed item. And we've been getting a lot--and I mean a LOT--of those emails lately. Guests are unhappy, fixers are overworked, organizers are frustrated and we here at RCHV are, well, frazzled!

We hold repair cafes almost every weekend in our network. We know, sometimes they're not close by so you have to wait--but there will always be another cafe in your hood or your county, maybe even as soon as the following month. So please help us out--our fixers give so generously of their time volunteering to fix things during cafes. Please don't ask them to take things home to fix them afterwards. If there's advice to be given, take it! A part needs to be bought? Purchase it! The fixer might even be able to help you order it online on your phone at the cafe. But then bring the item and the new part to the next cafe and let our fixers do what they do best--volunteer their time willingly and happily and without strings attached.

We're back, baby! September is always the start of a brisk fall season and we've got cafes for every weekend but the first, which is Labor Day weekend. We've got cafes in Hyde Park, Catskill, Tusten, Mahopac, Saratoga Springs, Green Ossining, ColumbiaNE, Poughkeepsie, Woodbury and many more locations!
