Read our summary of the report.

Nominations have opened for the Doctors Manitoba Awards. You can help recognize and celebrate a colleague's accomplishments. The deadline is December 15.

This week, we are profiling one of the awards available: Physician of the Year. This award recognizes an exceptional achievement or contribution to the practice of medicine and/or to the community. Typically, nominees have made a recent significant achievement or advancement in the practice or study of medicine or they are widely recognized as an exceptional physician within the community they serve.

Recent winners include:

  • Dr. JosĂ© François (2024) for his efforts as a champion of rural, northern and francophone physician training and the role they have played in helping to turn around the family doctor shortage in our province.
  • Dr. Ryan Zarychanski (2023) for his groundbreaking work to rapidly assess the effectiveness of potential treatments for COVID-19, including both the success in identifying treatment options and the global collaborative approach he developed to identify them.
  • Dr. Marcia Anderson (2022) for her work in the pandemic response leveraging data to ensure provincial policy applied an equity lens to vaccine availability and targeted outreach, ultimately reducing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous and racialized communities.

Patient Safety Week Starts Monday

This year, the theme for Canadian Patient Safety week is reducing all forms of health care harm, to create safety for everyone. Recent data shows that in 2022-2023, one in 17 hospital stays in Canada involved at least one harmful event.

In the past, patient safety efforts have been focused on potentially preventable physical harm.  But healthcare harm can come in other forms, such as psychological, spiritual and social harm.

What other actions can you take? Examples include learning more about trauma informed care, Truth and Reconciliation, or identifying personal actions you can take to create safe environments and reduce risks. Learn more at the Shared Health page for Patient Safety Week, and watch for resources and events at your site.
