Put on Your Walking Shoes!

It is time once again for our annual participation in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community.
  • Walk the actual day of the event.

  • "Walk" from the comfort of your own home--just sponsor a walker to walk for you!

  • Form a team! Come up with a team name! See which team can garner the most support.
FUN, FUN, and MORE FUN!
  • There will be music, snacks, fruit, water, coffee, giveaways, post walk raffles, and more...

  • Walkers who raise $30 or more and are onsite get the official walk t-shirt!

  • Walkers who raise $50 or more get entered in the Highmark raffle!

Flash Challenge for  the Week of April 30 - May 6

Any walker who raises $100 new dollars online between April 30 and May 6 will get a chance to win a $200 gift card to the retailer of her/his choice. (Full list of available retailers will be provided to the winner.)

One overall winner will be selected among all walk locations.  The winner will be announced via the Highmark Walk Facebook Page on May 7.

Our goal this year is to raise $6,000

  • You can walk and make a contribution.
  • You can form a team and your team raises a contribution... and maybe members of your team know someone else who will form their own team, and the network grows and grows!
  • Or, you don't come at all, and just make a contribution from the comfort of your own home.
  • Get your company/office to sponsor your team (Corporate Sponsorship), or just you (Individual Sponsorship).
  • Get friends and relatives to contribute.  Every dollar counts.
  • Sometimes people ask, "Do we contribute so much per mile?" Answer is no...donors to the walk just contribute anything they want, from $1 to thousands!

When:  May 18, 2019
Where: HACC, 1 HACC drive, Harrisburg 17110
Time: Check-in starts at 7:45 AM, walk begins at 9:00 AM
You can walk 5K or the One-Mile Fun Walk.

Craig's Corner
A Message from our President and CEO

We encourage you to get involved in three big Arc efforts in May (more details elsewhere in this newsletter):
  1. The Highmark Walk, May 18th. Please be a sponsor. You can sponsor and stay home or actually attend and walk, or even better... form your own team for a more powerful result.  Our goal is $6,000 this year.

  2. Jill Fulton in concert, May 31. What a deal: Parking + prime seating on the deck + wine tasting-- all for a mere $10 per ticket.  Tables seat four.  We encourage you to pick up two or three tables for you and your friends/family.  WHAT A GREAT WAY TO KICK OFF THE SUMMER SEASON!  Incidentally, 100% of the ticket price is returned to our programs and services.

  3. Our Art, Our Voice!  Consumer art is celebrated this fall (September 3rd through October 31) during our 45th Annual Our Art, Our Voice! Art Show.  The month of May is a great time to submit an entry.  We are giving all the Special Needs artists plenty of time to prepare their work; August 30th is the deadline to submit.  Why not do it now and be set and ready?  We have already started collecting terrific pieces.  Do you know someone with Special Needs who expresses themselves through art?  Let's showcase their talent!
Further down the calendar is the Family Fun Day/Faith Into Action picnic and festival July 13th.  You'll be hearing more about that soon, but please save the date! Noon to four.  Back by everyone's request: We'll have our pie walk and bingo for Consumers to enjoy!   Our friend, Joanne, will be back to lead the pie walk--I believe this is her fifth year to do so!

Golf Sponsorships!  The big date to save: Our 4th Annual Million Dollar Golf Outing September 16th!  We are looking for sponsors.  Please contact me for a full list of sponsorship opportunities.

Thank you, HE&R: A tremendous thank you this month to executives of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts whose leaders spent the entire day on April 25th volunteering for our Arc by addressing envelopes for our upcoming fall mailing.  Additionally, a month or so earlier, our friends at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts provided us a spectacular donation to support the EITC program for students in school with Special Needs.

Thank you, Mid Penn Bank: Another big EITC support came to us from our friends at Mid Penn Bank, who donated to support the EITC program for area schools.

A last bit of EITC news--many know our long time EITC instructor, Gay Bowman--Gay is back this year to lead the EITC classes!

Legislation Note: Please urge the importance of increasing the Able Act's eligibility age to 46.  Support the need to change Social Security law to enable people with disabilities to direct portions of their own earnings into their ABLE account, before it is counted toward their "substantial gainful activity" amount. This issue is important in order for people with disabilities to be able to work without risking loss of the public services they need to live independently in the community.  In Washington, our hope is for widespread support for H.R. 1814, the ABLE Age Adjustment Act.

Golf Outing in September! Save the Date!

Our Fourth Annual Million Dollar Golf Outing is September 16 at Deer Valley Golf Course.

Save the Date!

Companies--now is the time to consider sponsorship.  Sponsorships are the #1 key to the success of any golf outing, and your support ensures everyone has a good time, but even more important...that our programs and services continue for those in need.  Most sponsorships include foursomes, call Craig for more detail: 717.920.2727.

Our golf outing includes a wonderful lunch and breakfast provided by Chick-fil-A®, and the most giveaways of any golf outing of which we are aware--especially the grand prize of a cool million dollars paid by our insurance company to the person with the winning ticket to try a shot at a hole-in-one!  Many, many more prizes, all open to all players including free clubs and other holes with gift card prizes and of course, a new car lease from our friends at Sutliff Chevrolet.

"It is April now, but September will be here in the blink of an eye. We are asking all our friends and supporters to call us now so that we go into the fall with the knowledge that our golf outing is set, ready, and just waiting for our golfers!," said Craig George, Arc President.

"The Golf Outing is always loads of fun, everyone has such a spectacular time!   I think one of the things that really makes our outing enjoyable for those that sponsor is the knowledge that they are supporting a tremendous cause, and helping those without funding to be able to partake of our programs and services," said Ken Seeger, Director of Consumer Programs (programs and services.)

Remember: Please call 717.920.2727 and ask for Craig George today to secure your foursome's spot in the outing, and to line out sponsorship, which is available in multiple price ranges.

Car Wash Coming June 8

The youth from Faith Into Action are hosting two car washes to raise funds to support the massive Family Festival to be held on the grounds of Camp Curtin Academy this year on Saturday, July 13.  The Arc of Dauphin County will host a section set off to one side, just for our Consumers to come enjoy relaxation, fun, and games.

You can help support this stellar event by having your car washed at either of these two locations/dates:
  • Harrisburg 1st Assembly, 4100 N. Progress avenue, Harrisburg. Saturday, June 1, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

  • The Arc of Dauphin County, 2569 Walnut street, Saturday, June 8, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

An additional and very engaging fundraiser for the Family Festival is Harrisburg 1st Got Talent on Sunday, May 19.  If you sing, dance, play an instrument, and would like to participate, download your application here. Applications must be received by May 5.

abc27 News Daybreak Anchor James Crummel will emcee the event.  The celebrity judge panel includes Brett Thackara (abc27 News Meteorologist) and  Emily Cook ( 2018 HBG1ST Got Talent Winner.)

Parent's Club Launching in June

Following one of our recent Lunch & Learn programs, some parents "lingered longer" talking about the program we had just experienced, that had given many inspiration. Many then--and at other times over the past several years--expressed the desire for a parents' group where parents could talk candidly with one another about their lives and experiences with their child or children who had Special Needs.

"I'd like to learn from others about what works, what doesn't work...ideas and inspirations," one parent said. Here at the Arc, we have had--at various times--requests for a special mentoring or idea sharing round table. "This is an idea whose time has come!," exclaimed Craig George, Arc President. "We are going to launch a no cost parent group where ideas can be exchanged. We will call it the 'Arc Parent's Club'" he said.

"We have spoken for some time about the idea of getting a group of families together around a pot of coffee and other beverages, to just sit back in a relaxed way and have some general discussions that folks would find helpful, even inspirational," said Beth Light, Arc Advocate. "Kathy Gingerich and many of us at the Arc have talked about this being a helpful idea; now we are going to launch it," she added.

"We want to have our meeting in a relaxed, casual atmosphere, and will sit down together in our warm and cozy (and beautiful) Respite Center Great Room. Should the group grow out of that setting, we will move to our Community Room," Craig said.

Plans include early evening hours, perhaps from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM or 7:30 four evenings a year. We plan to launch the first Parent's Club meeting in early June. Please call our office at 717.920.2727 and let us know of your interest, and the best day for your schedule, as well as your preferred time. Alternately, you can e-mail bbressler@arcofdc.org with the dates and times that work best for you.

Medicaid/LTSS: House and Senate Approve MFP Extension

Thank you to everyone who wrote their Senators and Representatives as a result of our emergency call to action last month.  The result is positive!

On March 25, the House of Representatives approved the Medicaid Services Investment and Accountability Act of 2019 ( H.R.1839 ) which adds an additional $20 million for the Money Follows the Person (MFP) program through September 30, 2019.

The Senate passed H.R.1839 on April 2 and, as of that date, awaits the President's signature.

MFP has helped more than 88,000 seniors and individuals with disabilities move out of nursing homes and institutions.  Independent evaluations have proven that MFP improves the quality of life for individuals and has reduced Medicaid and Medicare expenditures by approximately 23%.

The Arc strongly supports re-authorization of MFP.  Additionally, the bill extends Medicaid's spousal impoverishment protections for home and community-based services beneficiaries until September 30.  The spousal impoverishment protection allows the spouse of a Medicaid long term services and supports (LTSS) beneficiary to maintain a modest amount of income and resources for food, rent, and medication.

Spotlight on our Volunteers

Meet Walter "Ricky" Machado, an energetic Senior at Dauphin County Technical School.

Ricky frequently comes to The Arc with his mother, Rhonda Mays.  While Mom is working on grant research, Ricky gifts to our Arc his time and talents doing errands, picking up downed tree limbs, moving heavy file boxes, and a host of other duties.

When we created this photo he was measuring a metal brace for a filing shelf he is building for our records storage room.

Next fall Ricky plans to launch his career as an HVAC technician by attending HACC after graduation.

Congratulations to our Official 2019 Newsletter Sponsor: Brown, Shultz, Sheridan & Fritz, aka "BSSF. "

BSSF promoted our Third Annual Million Dollar Golf Outing this fall by generously signing up to sponsor the ArcNews in 2019!
