READING IS FUNDAMENTAL

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated on February 5th each year, and is a global initiative that encourages people of all ages to come together and share the joy of reading aloud and promote literacy as a fundamental human right.

Guest readers visited classrooms across the Port Chester School District to celebrate the day this year.

HONORING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Carver Center proudly celebrated Black History Month with engaging Afterschool and Teen Center programs that highlighted Black culture, achievements, and history.

Through the Read Aloud initiative, students explored the Civil Rights Movement and expressed their understanding through creative artwork.

Teen Center's Movie Nights featured inspiring films like Remember the Titans and Hidden Figures, sparking discussions on leadership, resilience, and Black trailblazers' impact.

The month-long celebration will conclude tomorrow, March 1st, with a special meal for Dinner at Noon participants. The Port Chester/Rye Chapter of the NAACP is co-sponsoring the event, which will feature performances by talented, young ACT-SO participants; special foods provided by the Chapter, and art works created by children in Carver Center's elementary school program. The local NAACP's new President, James Henderson III, will share remarks about the importance of remembering Black History and Carver Center CEO, Anne Bradner, will honor the memory of the organizations' founders, community members who were part of a thriving African-American middle class in Port Chester during the 1940's and 1950's.

UNLOCKING COLLEGE FUNDING

Our Teen Center hosted a financial aid award workshop for teens and their parents providing a clear, step-by-step guide to understanding financial aid award letters. The workshop was hosted in a bilingual English & Spanish format to ensure that both students and their parents understood important information. 

Families learned how to interpret key components like grants, loans, as well as tips for maximizing aid.

The workshop helped to demystify the process to ensure families feel confident in their college funding decisions.
