Boise School District Students Shine in 2025 Human Rights Art and Writing Awards

Students from the Boise School District made an impressive showing in the 2025 Human Rights Art and Writing Awards, hosted by the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights. The annual contest invited students statewide to create original works inspired by Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirms that “all humans are born free and equal in dignity and in rights.”

Boise students rose to the challenge, earning multiple top honors across both art and writing categories. Their work stood out for its creativity, empathy, and powerful expression of human rights themes.

“We were so blown away by all the art and writing that was submitted and by how many students participated,” said Calley Sunderman, Education Programs Specialist at the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights. “Boise School District really showed up!”

“Students were asked to create art or writing inspired by Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” added Sunderman. “We saw such thoughtful, powerful interpretations from across the state. The students in Boise really brought their hearts and creativity to the table.”

Boise 8th Graders Moved by Holocaust Survivor’s Story Set to Music

Since 2010, 8th graders in the Boise School District have had the opportunity to attend an annual presentation sponsored by the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights at The Morrison Center. This year’s presenter, Mona Golabek, shared her mother’s story as a survivor of The Holocaust through powerful images, words, and music. A concert pianist, Ms. Golabek enthralled students by performing some of the same pieces her mother had played as a child in Vienna and London during World War II.

Based on the book, “The Children of Willesden Lane”, the performance charted Ms. Golabek’s mother, Lisa Jura’s journey on the “Kindertransport” a rescue effort that safely brought 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi-occupied territories to Great Britain, her time in London in a youth home, and her eventual acceptance into the Royal Academy of Arts.

Mona Golabek is the founder of the Hold On To Your Music Foundation, an organization dedicated to fostering hope through the power of storytelling and music. The educational experience for our 8th graders is made possible by the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights, the Morrison Center Endowment Foundation, the Boise Public School Foundation, and, of course, our teachers, parents and students.

Engineering Day at Riverside Elementary Inspires Future Innovators

An example of Boise School District’s commitment to robust, relevant, and supportive learning for every student

Riverside Elementary was abuzz with excitement on March 26th as every student—from curious Kindergartners to confident sixth graders—took part in a full day dedicated to exploring the world of engineering.

Engineering Day at Riverside was more than just a fun break from routine. It was a hands-on, minds-on opportunity for students to engage deeply in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education—one of the many ways the Boise School District delivers on its promise to provide robust and relevant learning experiences for all students in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Over 30 dedicated volunteers, many of them engineers from our local community, shared their time and talents to lead lessons and guide students through an array of engineering challenges. From launching homemade trebuchets to piloting drones and designing spacecraft for NASA, students were immersed in authentic learning that sparked creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking.

Using tools like Indi cars, Vex robotics, and their own imaginations, students explored the engineering design process and practiced important life skills like collaboration, perseverance, problem-solving, and reflection. Every task—from the smallest Lego challenge to the most ambitious space mission prototype—was an opportunity for students to stretch their thinking, take risks, and celebrate discovery.

Events like Engineering Day reflect the Boise School District’s deep commitment to STEM education and to nurturing the strengths and interests of each student.

Whether they’re building bridges out of straws or coding their own robot paths, our students are developing the mindsets and skills they’ll need to shape the future.

Riverside’s Engineering Day is just one example of how we strive to ensure every child experiences engaging, meaningful learning in a warm and supportive environment—and it's a day our young engineers won’t soon forget.

Celebrating Our Boise School Librarians – April 4th, School Librarian Day

April 4th is School Librarian Day, a time to recognize the dedicated librarians across the Boise School District who do far more than manage books. They spark curiosity, nurture a love of reading, and create safe, welcoming spaces where students grow as learners and thinkers.

From helping students find just the right book to supporting research and digital literacy, our librarians are essential partners in education. Thank you for the heart, knowledge, and care you bring to our schools each day.

Boise School District Stands with Survivors on Denim Day

The Boise School District is proud to recognize Denim Day on Tuesday, April 30, as a powerful symbol of support for survivors of sexual violence and a unified stand against harmful myths surrounding consent.

Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to wear denim as a visible statement of solidarity, awareness, and education. Denim Day began as a global movement in response to a court ruling that perpetuated misconceptions about sexual assault—reminding us all that clothing never equals consent.

By participating, we aim to foster a culture of respect, empathy, and support throughout our schools and community.

Let’s make a difference—one pair of jeans at a time. 💙

West and Borah Jazz Bands to Perform at Boise Music Week’s “All That’s Jazz!” Event

Mark your calendars for an unforgettable night of music as the West Junior High and Borah High School jazz bands take the stage during Boise Music Week’s celebrated “All That’s Jazz!” event, happening Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the South Junior High Auditorium, 3101 W. Cassia St.. This year’s program, titled “Under the Influence,” promises an inspiring evening of live jazz—free and open to the public.

Directed by longtime Boise School District music educator Michael Rosenthal, the West Junior High Jazz Band will kick off the night. Rosenthal, widely respected for his dedication to student growth and musical excellence, has left a lasting impact on the Boise music scene. Many of his students go on to continue their musical journeys in high school and beyond.

They’ll be followed by the Borah High School Jazz Band under the direction of Matthew Clay, who continues the tradition of excellence with dynamic student performances. Together, these two bands showcase the strength of Boise School District’s music programs and the incredible talent of our local youth.

Capping off the evening will be a performance by the Van Paepeghem Jazz Band, a popular local ensemble made up of professional musicians—many of whom, like Rosenthal, are current or former educators. Their appearance is a highlight for jazz lovers and a chance to see professional-level performance up close.

Part of the city’s musical fabric since 1919, Boise Music Week is a 100% volunteer-driven celebration of Boise’s vibrant arts scene. From theater to organ recitals, and from children’s events to Broadway-level productions, all Boise Music Week performances are completely free of charge—a gift from the community to the community.

The 2025 “All That’s Jazz!” event is chaired by Beverly Schumacher. Learn more and see the full Boise Music Week schedule at BoiseMusicWeek.org.

Come out and support our young musicians as they bring the spirit of jazz to life on stage—no tickets required!
