THE HUB DIRECTOR'S CORNER
On My Mind and From the Heart
Summer is here! The first budding of the flowers brought signs of a fresh new season, a promise of sunshine and lazy summer days.

Summer also brings the all American past time of Baseball. This year with the restrictions finally lifted, Little League is back on and baseball evenings now fill my week.

I love watching the Little Leaguers on the field. So many small kids that are barely able to tie their own cleats and buckle their belts are given a glove and hat and run out to the baseball diamond to play ball. Watching the kids is fun and also many times a comical experience. There is a certain point in the game around the fourth inning that the attention span of 5-8 year olds has hit its max and no amount of coaching or yelling from the sidelines can get them to keep their gloves on and stop rolling around in right field.

Although, when they go up to bat, each child magically gets a few minutes of hyper focus as they walk up to home plate. Meanwhile, parents, fans and coaches shout at them simultaneously to, " get your elbow up", "put your feet farther apart", "wait for the right ball" and "step into it". Somehow the same child who needed help getting their uniform on just 30 minutes ago does the miraculous--they make contact with a nine inch ball hurtling through the air. My favorite part is that moment when the bat hits the ball and the pent up anxiousness turns to shock and amazement that they actually did it. In the few seconds that it registers that they made contact, the look on their face is priceless; joyful surprise, pride and a brief moment when they try to remember what to do next. RUN!!!

Watching Little League, I have had the opportunity to see this scenario play out time and time again. No matter how many times a kid goes up to bat it is always the same set of emotions that play out. Nervous excitement that turns to sheer surprise that they did it and joyful pride as the success soaks in. Of course there is also the other scenario that they don't make contact and have to turn and face the team as they shuffle back to the dugout in disappointment.

There is always a next time and the kids always pick up that bat no matter what the last inning was like because they remember the joy of contact. What would happen if the fear and anxiety of picking up the bat and failing stopped them from ever trying again? Then it would be impossible to feel the elation of success.

How many times in my life have I felt trepidation about trying to do something I have never done before, something that felt impossible? Many. There are times I have never picked up that bat and took the risk and so missed out on the pleasure of a new experience. But far more times I do take that risk and swing that bat and hit a home run that was never possible without first feeling scared about failure.

I hope that you make time to pick up your bat and hit one out of the park very soon.
