Summer Reading Reflection
Dear Families,
I am excited to be a guest writer today while Mrs. Bolaños is on a spiritual retreat with the principals of our Archdiocese of Seattle and the Office for Catholic Schools. Mrs. Bolaños is experiencing the programming for our upcoming faculty and staff retreat in October. A train-the-trainer, or rather, retreat-the-retreat leader, of sorts. I look forward to the spiritual retreat day that she will bring back to our faculty and staff.
Thinking of retreating and bringing back learning, this summer, our teachers were tasked with reading two books. The first book on discipline was assigned, while the second book selection incorporated a bit of choice, intentionally modeling an element of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The books offered were on UDL practices pertaining to their grade level or special area, such as music, art, PE. Our faculty will continue to learn and explore UDL all this year (and beyond), and we are really excited about what is being implemented in classrooms each day.
However, I want to concentrate a bit on the first book. Last year was my first year in the role of vice principal at Saint Patrick. And being the vice principal, I had my fair share of handling discipline issues. A frequent thought I had was, ‘Is this office worthy, or could this have been handled within the classroom?’ Of course, there are issues that are office referral-worthy, however, there were definitely some that were not. To begin working towards thoughtfully limiting missed classroom instruction or work time, teachers read the book Hacking School Discipline: 9 Ways to Create a Culture of Empathy and Responsibility Using Restorative Justice by Nathan Maynard and Brad Weinstein. (This book ties in very nicely to the already established methods of Responsive Classroom used at SPCS.) During the August inservice, time was dedicated to individual self-reflection, as well as with a partner and within a small group. Teachers were able to think about how they can grow in incorporating restorative practices in their classrooms - practices that benefit all students in the classroom when conflict or misbehavior arises. The walls of our classrooms house families within. We want all family members to work together through issues just as we do within our own families at home. Each and every member of the family is important, loved, and respected. We give space to seek forgiveness, be forgiven, forgive, and repair and rebuild relationships - all while becoming the best person they can be. Our faculty, staff, and administration continue to work to do all things in love.

Dear Friends,

New Turf Installation

Hydroseeding Complete
The parking strip on North Yakima Avenue was hydro-seeded. The area will continue to be roped off for a few weeks, so there is no foot traffic to allow the root system to be established.
Light use will need to continue for several months after that so we can enjoy green grass in the spring. Please use the crosswalks to avoid stepping on the green strip.

Safe Environment Training
All adults must complete the Virtus Training to volunteer at Saint Patrick Catholic School.
Adult volunteer requirements include:
- Background check completed on or before the first day of service and every three years while in active service.
- Abuse prevention initial training is completed within 30 days of starting service, and refresher training is every three years while in active service.
- Policies are read and signed on or before the first day of service.
If you have finished the initial training, please log into your account to ensure you are up to date with the background check and all modules!

All middle school athletes must have an updated physical on file at Saint Patrick Catholic School to participate in Cross Country Running.

Sports Physicals for Middle Schoolers
All 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade athletes must have an updated physical on file at Saint Patrick Catholic School to participate in Middle School Athletics, including Volleyball and Cross Country.
Forms should be turned in before the first practice. Physicals are good for 24 months, so get yours early.
Completed physical forms can be submitted via email to Marla Petronzio at school@saintpats.org or can be dropped off in person in the School Office.
