Intermission:
Oasis Ukulele Band
The OASIS Ukulele Band plays weekly on Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at the OASIS Senior Center in Old Town Orcutt (420 Soares Ave.). The Band was formed in November of 2003 by Ben Tromp. Ben visited a ukulele band in Ventura, CA, and was so excited that he wanted to start a band in Orcutt. Sign-ups and practice started soon after and the rest is history. The band was originally named the OASIS Play and Sing Along Society. Their first performance was a potluck dinner at the OASIS Center on May 10, 2004. The group had little cards with the songs printed on them and passed out to the audience to sing along. The band has since shorted its name to The OASIS Ukulele Band with an average of 30 people participating weekly. We have our own printed and electronic music book that is added to regularly. We offer free beginner and intermediate lessons at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays before our band practices. Many students from these classes have joined the OASIS Band. Past leaders include Rey Reynante and our own Tom Dutart. The band is currently mostly led by BSR member Diane Brand with help from many other band members. This show may be broadcast on our Facebook page Sunday, August 28th, beginning at around 11:50 AM. To catch the show, go to Facebook and search for Basin Street Regulars or go to: https://www.facebook.com/ BasinStreetRegulars / You will be able to watch as soon as we go Live at around 11:50 AM. You will need to have or create a Facebook page to view this event live on Facebook. Donations will be accepted online during this event. Presidents Message
By Rhonda Cardinal
I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank the person that is helping to make Jubilee and the Sunday sessions truly happenCurtis Reinhart. A few months ago, I wrote an article about being overwhelmed and unable to carry out the duties of being the club President as well as being the Festival Director. This was on top of new commitments to my immediate family members, who I relocated to this area last year following the death of my mother. These responsibilities, though easing, have not disappeared.
Curtis stepped in and started absorbing responsibilities, allowing our Festival to move forward. He took the lead on moving it to January, established a new relationship with Paul Irving of My805Tix, and worked with the City on getting us back up and running in the Vet’s Hall. When the City did not have an employee to be our Hall Monitor for our Sunday sessions, Curtis was our substitute city employee. He is also working with the Hotel Association to get us better rates for lodging for both our musicians and attendees in January, as well as spearheading our venue search. He and Jim Borland have been also helped select and secure bands for our Sunday sessions. Some of the new bands that they have brought in have brought the house down.
Many of these tasks were previously done by Hugh Robinson, who has left the area. Hugh did a lot of things for us, most of them under the radar, until he was no longer there to perform them. You never know where your help is going to come from or if there will be any at all. A lot of people have stepped in this year to fill the gaps and others have stepped up and taken on more responsibilities. I don’t want to minimize any of their contributions. All are critical to keeping us going.
But if I had to pick someone who is directly responsible for ensuring that we will have a successful festival in 2023 and beyond, I would have to say it is Curtis. It is a great relief to know that when those few days happen next January, there will be someone besides me who can ride herd over this fantastic, and yet challenging event. Thanks Curtis, and Happy Birthday.

IN THE WINGS
by Rhonda Cardinal
We have some great shows coming up for you in September and October. In September, we will feature the Little Lizzy Combo and the Talia Ortega Quartet. Helmed by the "powerhouse vocals" (Broadway World) of classically-trained Lizzy, the Little Lizzy Combo dives deep into the musical treasures of the 1920s-1940s. Lizzy is most known as the frontwoman and songwriter of Lizzy & the Triggermen, dubbed "10-piece jazz sensations" (LA Weekly) and "one of the hottest swing bands in LA" (Fox 11).
Their debut album, "Good Songs for Bad Times," hit #3 on iTunes Jazz charts. The Little Lizzy Combo features the same incredible musicians as the big band, including Dan Barrett, Nate Kettner, and Sam Roche, but in a much more intimate musical setting that thrillingly showcases Lizzy's songbird voice and the band's world-class musicianship.
With wailing horns, killer vocals, and a lethal rhythm section, the band channels the electrifying swagger of the '20s and '30s big band and makes it feel new and modern through a mixture of originals and re-imagined vintage gems.
TALIA ORTEGA is a multi-instrumentalist (flute, saxophone, vocals), dancer, and perpetual student. She has performed at Carnegie Hall and alongside great jazz musicians such as Dave Douglas, Wayne Bergeron, Donny McCaslin, Randy Brecker, Ada Rovatti, and Grammy Award winner Louie Ortega. Born and raised in San Luis Obispo, her studies at Cuesta College, Cal Poly, and the Central Coast Jazz Institute have helped her become an active and versatile working professional in the local music and dance communities. During her Cal Poly career, Talia was a vocalist and featured improviser with the Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble and Cal Poly Jazz Ensemble as well as the first flute in the Cal Poly Symphony. Talia is a former winner of the SLO Jazz Federation's Young Jazz Scholarship Award and a winner of the Cal Poly Symphony’s annual concerto competition. Talia realizes that both music and education are boundless and has pursued a career sharing her love of music with the youth of the community!
Talia Ortega will be joined by a quartet of talented community all-stars including composer and vibraphonist Sean Collins. The Talia Ortega quartet is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a tap on your toes!
Our October feature band is still at work. Stay tuned for exciting details! Our opening band will be the Decomposing Brass Quintet. The Decomposing Brass Quintet is comprised of brass players from the Friendly Neighborhood Big Band, with an occasional guest performer as a substitute. The formation of the group was the brainchild of Mitch Latting, David Johns, and Danny Beher. They have been providing audiences with performances of great jazz standards, pop, Broadway, and movie themes.
The band members have years of experience playing with various groups and are delighted to be affiliated with the DBQ. Some of the groups are: The Friendly Neighborhood Big Band, Starlight Dreamband, Central City Swing, Central Coast Brass, Estero Brass, Trumpet Alliance of Cuesta College, and the Royal Garden Swing Orchestra of Cuesta College.

Jubilee Corner
By: Rhonda Cardinal
We are starting to take advantage of our January time slot by requesting help from the Pismo Beach Hospitality Association. Last month, Curtis and I had a meeting with members of this association and asked them for help with getting better and more consistent rates from the myriad properties in Pismo and also, possibly, one of the beachfront halls to be used as a venue. Gordon Jackson from the Conference and Visitors Bureau, put together a Request for Proposal (with help from Curtis) to send to all of the hotels asking them to bid on a certain number of rooms at a reduced rate. We are also trying to get some free rooms or steeply discounted rooms for our band members. It is our hope that we may be able to house them in style this year without breaking our bank account. We should see the fruits of this effort in the coming weeks. The other reduced-rate hotel rooms will be available to you, our customers. We continue to hire bands and also try to find the best fifth venue for our festival. We are hoping for a beachfront room, as mentioned above. Tom Rigney and Flambeau have committed, and Curtis was able to nail down Black Market Trust for us. They are a big hit at the Fresno festival every year. We have also finalized our arrangements with My805Tix. They will be our online ticketing platform for 2023. This will greatly ease the workload for our volunteers and allow for up-front data collection. Our customers will be pleased when they do not have to fill out their hotel information in the midst of the festival. Our first print ad in the Syncopated Times will appear this month. Overall, things are going well, but there is a lot to do to get a live festival back on its feet. If you want to be part of the planning committee, please contact me at (805) 937- 8402 or e-mail me at jwcardinal@msn.com. There is always room for more help and everyone brings something to the table. Our meetings have generally been on Zoom on the first Tuesday of the month at 2:00. I hope to hear from you.

July was Better Than June.
Technical Report by Rhonda Cardinal
The July show went much better than June, all of our key people were present that day, including all of the band members. The house was fuller than it has been since we came back to it in December. Slowly but surely, our numbers keep creeping up. The Big Sirs of Swing were fantastic, they generated a lot of buzz. The reformulated Night Bloomin Jazzmen were better than ever; lots of people came out to see the new version of this band. They were not disappointed. Simon was back in the house, to our immense relief. The Livestream was looking good. Simon updated the software on his digital camera and the picture was stunning. Unfortunately, our internet was not as good as our technology. This is in spite of boosting devices and backup hot spots. The picture during the Night Blooming Jazzmen part of the show started to get choppy, and then, towards the end of the second set, the internet crashed all together. Simon spent the entire break restarting it and was able to get back online by the second set. The broadcast ended up being in two parts. We are not sure how we are going to resolve this issue long-term. Simon thinks the problem lies with the Provider and is not a problem with the Vet’s Hall. Next month we will be in the Cardinal backyard. We may do a Livestream from the house, but only on our Facebook page. We will do a full Livestream again in September. Maybe we will know more by then. To see this show and all other previous shows, go to our website, http://pismojazz.com/, and scroll down until you see the link for the BasinStreetRegulars YouTube Channel. Or go directly to: https://www.youtube.com/user/ BasinStreetRegulars/. You can also see it on our Facebook page, https:// www.facebook.com/BasinStreetRegulars, and look under videos. And while you’re at it, check out all of our videos, starting with the most recently uploaded. In September, we will feature The Little Lizzy Combo and the Talia Ortega Quartet. This show will be Livestreamed from the Vet’s Hall.

Thomas L. Tucker
Cornet Chop Suey
Tom Tucker, 86, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2022. Born in St Louis in 1936, Tom attended Sullivan High School and graduated from Missouri Science and Technology with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Shortly after college graduation, he married Elinor Ambruster of Cuba and entered Officer Candidate School in the US Navy. He managed Tri County Loan Company and later joined his brother as co-owner of Tucker Motor Company. Tom retired at the rank of Commander from the Naval Reserves after 27 years. After retirement, Tom's best life began when he became an avid member of the St Louis Jazz Club and began playing his cornet in St Louis. In 1996, Tom and dear friend Brian Casserly formed Cornet Chop Suey, a Dixieland jazz band - playing 215 jazz festivals coast to coast, 13 international jazz cruises, and recording 10 CDs. His band members would become family - and the success of the band, the pinnacle of his musical career. Tom passed his incredible love of music onto his three daughters, Susan Tucker-Monroe (flute), Elizabeth 'Beth' Tucker Wanamaker (trumpet), Lauren Tucker (cornet), and his granddaughter Aubrey Wanamaker (trumpet). He loved being surrounded by 'his harem,' and treasured a special relationship with son-in-law Tom Monroe, and Beth's partner Kevin Hopper. He was preceded in death by his parents, John James 'J.J.' and Adelia Tucker, and brother William (Bill) Tucker; survived by sister Marilyn Tucker Batten. Memorial contributions are appreciated to the St Louis Jazz Club/Band Camp Scholarship Fund, and the St Louis Lymphoma And Leukemia Society.

July 24th Sunday Session
by Shonda Croly

Big Sirs of Swing opened our show to a full house. It was their first time on our stage. They are a local band from San Luis Obispo County. Ron Mileur heads the group of fine musicians. The first tune was, “J’attendrai,” which had a bass solo. “Bernie’s Tune” is always a favorite of the crowd. Daniel sang, “Embraceable You,” with his unique and enjoyable voice. He is great on the violin too. Forrestt did another Bass solo in “Troublant Bolero,” and our dancers filled the floor. “AllerRetore” was fast and bouncy. “Nuages,” had another bass solo by Forrestt, slow and sweet, and dancers were cheek to cheek. Daniel sang, “Undecided.” “Douce Ambiance,” and “Double Scotch,” were played. Our dancers enjoyed, “Tchavolo Swing.” The set was finished with “Coquette.” The band was well received and got a standing ovation. We heard lots of great comments, so I’m positive we will be seeing this band again.
Daniel Cimo: violin & vocals,
Forrestt Williams: Bass Guitar,
Ron Mileur: Rhythm Guitar,
Alex Morrison: Stand Up Bass.
Night Blooming Jazzmen retired at our 2019 Jazz Jubilee by the Sea. Chet Jaeger passed away in January of this year, he was 97 years old. The band asked the family if they could keep the band going and keep the name. Chet’s family said yes. None of the original members of the band are left, but the band goes on in the memory of Chet. They opened with a lively tune, “At the Jazz Band Ball.” Les is now the leader of the band and has moved from piano to cornet. He spoke a lot about Chet. Les sang, “Rocking Chair,” in tribute to Chet. Carol sang, “Hard Hearted Hannah.” Jim sang, “Cab Driver.” “Happy Birthday,” was played for Mike’s wife Patti. Mike sang, “Ace in the Hole.” Nick sang, “It Happened in Monterey.” Lots of dancers were on the floor while the band played “Black and Blue.” Phil sang an updated version of “I’m Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter.” He was going to write an email, in hopes she would send a tweet and their love would be in cyberspace. It was very cute, but once again our internet crashed. “Sweet Georgia Brown,” had our dancers swing’n and the parasols marching, everyone was having a great time except Simon. After the song Rhonda told the band to break so, we could try and get the internet back up. Simon and I did something called a speed test, it was all French to me, but he knew what it was all about. The band took the stage and played something, but I didn’t catch it we were still working on the internet. Phil sang, “Let’s, Sue,” to the tune of “Sweet Sue,” it was cute. Andrew did a piano solo, “My Gal Sal.” Carol sang, “Some of These Days.” Les did an intro to “Cod Fish Ball,” which Carol sang. We had a screaming good time with, “Yellow Dog Blues.” The set was finished with, “That’s a Plenty.” The band had done an amazing job, everyone was pleased. I’m positive Chet was looking down and as proud as ever. Les Deutsch-Leader, Cornet, Sax, Piccolo, Andrew Barrett-Piano, Jim Richardson-Reeds, Phil Andreen-Trombone, Mike Olsen- Banjo, Nick Scarmack-Drums, Carol Andreen-Vocals, subbing on the Bass was John Dundas.
